A brass monkey (or drake) was a 1600's naval cannon that looked like this. [ATTACH]59805[/ATTACH] That handle at the rear was called a monkey tail. They were susceptible to breaking off in battle during cold weather. The term balls off a brass monkey actually originated in the US in the early 1900's. No one is 100% sure who coined it first. It is simply an adaptation of the original phase. Albeit funnier.
