UofL offers Pulaski's Jake Johnson as a walk-on

 

KHSAA record setting WR Jake Johnson from Pulaski County receives a preferred Walk-on offer from the University of Louisville.

I have said it before and will say it again..someone is about to get an absolute steal of a slot receiver.

You see it on the college level all the time. Guys that just know how to get open and how to catch the ball. They aren't the fastest and they aren't the tallest, but most of the time their football IQ is one of the highest on the field and that's how they get open.

 

Agree with ATL. He will be an outstanding WR for someone willing to take a chance on him!

Clemson and the Renfro kid is a perfect example. He was a Walk-On and has been vital to their success as a slot guy.

Just My Opinion, but I would say Jake Johnson is the better receiver than Charles Walker.

 

CW is a better runner as he was a RB at St X. Walker's body is more prepared for the college game right out of high school. But still think JJ is the better receiver.

Jake Johnson has had one of the greatest HS careers in KY history. Fantastic HS player & classy competitor. Those attributes make him a perfect walk-on candidate. Like many other quality HS players, his "40" indicates he will struggle with the speed of the game at the college level. Charles Walker & Keyron Catlett both had better "college ready" speed and bodies as they departed HS for Division 1 football.

40 times are a tricky measure and tough to put a ton of stock in IMHO.

 

Do I think they have a lot of value? Sure

 

With that said, there are a lot of kids with blazing 40 times that never pan out. There is also a reason that track stars don't translate to football greats.

 

Think about a 40. You are running it in a straight line, wearing very little weight, in track shoes, from starting blocks. In football you are wearing pads, rarely running a straight line, and are starting from a standing position, and often times on fields in cleats with mud or grass.

 

I can 100% buy that you want as much speed as possible on your wideout who is running a go pattern or your Safety that is trying to get to the sideline from the hash mark to break up a pass in the air. With that said, how valuable really is a 40 for a slot receiver (like Johnson)? I would probably be more interested in his cone drill, his hands... because lateral quickness, cutting, and catching with tight coverage and a quick reaction will be used considerably more than his need for break away speed.

 

I honestly think that part of the reason why you have started to see more parity between the lesser schools in power 5 conferences and schools from mid-majors has a lot to do with people recruiting off of stars and how players look without pads on, rather than what they are seeing in live game situations.

completely again with this, coaches base too much of their recruiting on scouting services that generally just visit the name school. johnson will do well where ever he lands, heck of a competitor

Johnson will be fine is more about quickness and hands than anything for slots receiver. Now saying that combine quickness with good 40 top end speed doesn't hurt.

Congrats!! Be hard to pass up an opportunity to prove you have what it takes to play with the big boys!
