January 3, 20179 yr For those in the know what was the downside to the way the Ethics Committee operated before? Per reports the new House approved the lessening of the powers of the committee. The board was independent but will now be under the lawmakers. Lawmakers will now have the final say over any member accused of a violation. I believe I read in another report that they would no longer work off of anonymous tips. There must be more to the story. Was this board a problem in the past?
January 3, 20179 yr Author Further reading says that some of the House members who have been investigated previously felt the board was overzealous. The board was created in 2008 after the Abramhoff situation. Speaker Ryan was against the change.
January 3, 20179 yr Author The full house has not voted yet.. Doubt it will pass. Thank you. Poor wording on my part. Approved by the Republicans - not passed. Excuse my ignorance - how many votes needed to pass?
January 3, 20179 yr Author This is gone. It has been dropped after criticism from PEOTUS Trump. Let's be fair. PEOTUS Trump didn't critizice the vote or proposition. He questioned the timeliness and the priority.
January 3, 20179 yr Let's be fair. PEOTUS Trump didn't critizice the vote or proposition. He questioned the timeliness and the priority. ...and also to be fair, DJT pretty much quashed it. Anything that comes out of the blue by either side is probably not a good idea.
January 3, 20179 yr Author So that no one thinks I'm twisting words: Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump 4h4 hours ago With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump 4h4 hours ago ........may be, their number one act and priority. Focus on tax reform, healthcare and so many other things of far greater importance! #DTS
January 3, 20179 yr Author BTW President Trump is right that you're a brand new Congress and the FIRST potential proposal is to give the appearance that you're lowering ethics standards?
January 4, 20179 yr Hard to believe the Republicans were that tone deaf on this. From what I have read about this Ethics board, there are a lot of people on both sides of the aisle that don't think it is fair. However, to come out on the FIRST DAY with this after the election where Trump said "drain the swamp" is about as STUPID as STUPID can be. It is no wonder that Trump thinks most politicians are not that bright. So he sends out one tweet and they immediately cave.
