March 24, 20179 yr Anybody going to the Spiral Stakes? I have only missed a couple of them since it started back in the 80's as the Jim Beam Stakes. Sad to see how the event has declined over the years, but I am still going.

Stall doors hanging off the hinges in the bathroom, could definitely use new toilet seats and a new coat of paint. There isn't a word of the race this year in the media . Half of the betting machines don't work or function properly. What one machine calls a non winning ticket the one next to it might say winning ticket. :idunno: Heard that they are giving away baseball caps to the first 1200 fans with their $5 admission fee. I ran across an article about Man O' War. Man O' War Thoroughbred Champion Man O' War, perhaps the greatest Ky- bred thoroughbred ever, never raced in the Ky Derby, or, for that matter, competitively on a track in his home state. He was beaten only once, in the 1919 Sanford Memorial Stakes at Saratoga Springs. His surprising conquerer was named, appropriately enough, Upset. When the horse retired in 1920, the Lexington, Kentucky Chamber of Commerce announced that school children would throw flowers in his path during a parade through town. Owner Samuel Riddle rejected the idea. "He's only a horse," he said via telegraph. Nonetheless, the champion thoroughbred was always treated like something more. When Man O' War, age 30, died on November 1,1947, he became the first thoroughbred to be embalmed in preparation for his funeral. Two thousand people turned out for the ceremony, which was broadcast nationwide on radio. He was extolled by nine speakers, and many who filed by his open casket reached down to touch his flesh. Local merchants draped their storefronts in black.
March 24, 20179 yr The facility needs to be taken over by a group of individuals that have some money and a desire to make winter racing in Kentucky an event. Once Jerry Carroll got out, the place has gone downhill on a regular basis. I still contend that before I die, there will be about 6 to 10 horse racing tracks in the entire country and that is all. As a whole, there are not many horse racing fans around any more which is sad.
March 24, 20179 yr I have hung out at Turfway Park several times this year because of the live music but everyone is right, Turfway is a run down dump and when they have the late night events the staff is always in a hurry to end the music and kick everyone out. In short, whoever is running Turfway Park is definitely running it into the ground.

The rumor mill has Turfway becoming a racino in the future. Heck, they ruined River Downs, why not Turfway.

Heck, they ruined River Downs, why not Turfway. So true. River Downs was a nice little old fashioned treasure of horse racing on the river. Now horse racing is a crappy little corner in a half rate casino. I am guilty of going to Turfway almost weekly. Even when we have lunch in the glassed in room (the classier section), the guys in our group use the restrooms upstairs, and they aren't picky. Most of the place is just plain gross. The people I know there say it will be a racino. I don't mind that as long as racing isn't an afterthought like it is at River Downs. Don't have high hopes though. We used to buy seats on the 4th floor, which, in the old days were sold out. After the 4th race, you could sit for free, but only two windows open, no concession stands...sad. Plus, I lost..which didn't help. Next year I am going to make our bets early and cookout at home like we do for Breeders Cup.
