Group of 5 Considering Their Own Playoff System

Featured Replies

Not sure if a playoff in this form will ever happen but I do think the Group of 5 schools need to do a better job tying into bowls that would allow champions to play each other.

Agreed. One of the must-see games every year used to be when the C-USA and Mountain West champions played each other in the Liberty Bowl. Loved watching Louisville in their bowl games back in those years.

And it doesn't have to be locked in. Have three bowls, five champions and one at-large. Pair comparable teams in reasonably close locations. Maybe MAC champ plays AAC champ one year, then plays Mountain West champ the next. Basically the exact same thing that the committee does with the four non-playoff bowls.

Or considering the playoff committee is obligated to take one Group of 5 team right now, maybe just go with two bowls and the four winners that didn't get selected. There are numerous options in which this could be done right and done well.

I like your thought process here. This year I would go Sun Belt vs MWC then C-USA vs AAC.

The AAC will never agree to a G5 playoff. We can stop the conversation there...

The AAC commissioner said emphatically no way they would ever do this. But there were some AD's outside of the AAC who thought it was a good idea. But no way this ever happens.

This I like. No point in a full playoff but when you've got one representative playing in the New Years Six, put the other four champions in a pot and create the best matchups possible.

Maybe put them on that first weekend of bowl season when there are no other games so that they're the showcase of that opening Saturday of postseason.

It's an improvement on now so it seems worth dosing to me.

Very true. And I'm guessing they'd nix a champions bowl like I described too.
