Conner down 30-20 at half but picked it up offensively 2nd half. Wasn't there but heard that they had a ton of turnovers in the game. Sometimes you have to win ugly and maybe this was the case tonight. Big win for Conner as this was a district game.

The substituting for Conner still baffles me. They have about 14 girls on the bench but only about 7.5 see any playing time. I understand the need to win. It if your other girls aren't getting time you're going to wish they did when push comes to shove and you need them. Maybe there will come games when more playing time will be passed around and experienced gained but so far I'm no sure that will happen.

Not sure how many Conner games you have been to this year but I have seen them all and in most of their previous games Coach Stamm has gone 10 or 11 players deep. Last night's game was a tough 33rd district game where he needed to stick with experience. I would say that's why he didn't go as deep into his bench as you seem to think he should have.

Bad free throw shooting is going to keep this team from fulfilling their big goals if it doesn't turn around. They have gone to the line 108 times and only made 51 for 47%. Many of those were front ends of 1 and 1s. Against Cooper they were 15 of 31. Looks like some extra free throw time is due over the holidays. That kind of shooting won't get it done against Highlands this week and they will make free throws.

I don't think I have missed many games in three years, maybe four. I understand it was a tough game, but some of the others have not been and the substituting still seemed the same.

Absolutely no dog in this fight......just stumbled across the thread.....if a coach is going 7.5 deep that is close to what most rotations are. If you have the luxury of going 8 or 9, that is GREAT! It may be early to know what the "rotation" is, but if the kids have been around a while, it becomes fairly obvious on the pecking order?

I agree. And even when you do introduce a 9 or 10, you are taking minutes away from your top kids. To your point, there is a hierarchy and regardless what people think, coaches place their kids in an order based on skills, trust and confidence. When you add additional kids to the rotation, you are taking minutes away from the kids you feel fall at the top of that hierarchy. Sometimes it's okay to go to 9-10 if there are position specific subs. But in reality, you really want your best 8 on the floor as much as possible.

Now I can't believe I'm saying that right before the HHS game...so Coach Stamm, feel free to go 14 deep tomorrow night! lol!

You're probably right, and by 7.5 deep I included the starters. It is early. It will all work out I'm sure of it. Conner has great players who are even better ladies off the court. I have no doubts they will go good things.

To quote a chapter of one of my good friends book who is a VERY good basketball coach:

Chapter 1:

1. Play your best players the most amount of minutes. That generally includes the starters and 2/3 more. Anyone else, spot minutes only.

2. Dont over coach players.

And to quote another coach that has had some of the most success at the high school and college level of any coach:

1. You will never win a Kentucky Derby with Mules.

Nail on the head for all three.
