North Laurel 35 Madison Southern 34

Featured Replies

Maggard has another big game, Asher returns, and the Jags move to 2-2 and avenge last year's terrible loss to Mad Southern.

Southern went for 2 and the win at the end of the game but the Jags stopped it. Great win for North Laurel! :thumb:

This was the last game that I needed for my contest.

I will have the scores posted in a little bit.

Congrats to the Jags on pulling out the win, while overcoming some adversity. I thought that NL was completely worn out, but bounced back, and got the win.

MS has a dandy QB, and a couple receivers that are awesome. #4 for MS is one heck of an athlete, he plays WR like it should be played, don't just catch the ball if it comes your way, but go after it, and GET IT.

Good win for North.

I think MTN. Thunder and I picked this score almost identical.

Congrats to North Laurel tonight on another win. The season looks to be taking off for you guys.:thumb: Good luck to both teams on the rest of your season.

A few stats:

Total yds: NL - 304, MS - 324

MS QB Zach McGuire was 18-34 passing for 5 TDs and 1 INT. He also ran 12 times for 66 yards.

MS WRs:

Dontell Baxter (19) - 7-58, TD

Rico Brown (4) - 4-57, TD

Josey Cruse (2) - 4-123, TD

(Baxter and Brown are both freshmen, BTW)

NL RB Chris Maggard rushed 29 times for 156 yards and two TDs

NL RB Ryan Brandenburg only ran twice, but both were for scores (9 and 46 yards, the long one being the eventual game-winner)

In his first action back, Shawn Asher ran 5 times for 71 yards and a TD, and had two other TDs called back because of penalties.

Couple other thoughts: This game was a back-and-forth affair, with North jumping out to a 13-0 lead, then MS coming back to go up 14-13. NL retook the lead at 21-14, then MS scored just before half to cut it to 21-20.

NL scored early in the third to make it 27-20, but MS retook the lead at 28-27 with a TD and conversion. Things then got really wild in the fourth.

MS was driving at the NL 35 with about 8:00 to play, and the Jags stopped McGuire on 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 to get the ball back. Four plays later, Brandenberg rumbled 46 yards for the go-ahead score, and Maggard caught the two-pointer to make it 35-28.

With 1:36 to play, McGuire hit Durham for a 30-yard score to cut it to 35-34. But instead of going for the tie — they had already missed an XP and had another one blocked — Carter elected to go for the win. The snap exchange was fumbled however, and North held.

Heckuva game.

A few people were writing off the Jags, one poster even commented that they should just give up on this season. I knew that once NL's new starters began to find their way, they would be fine. The coaches have adjusted to their personnel much better than they did last season and the players have adjusted to the changes made and really stepped up.

This is a big win for a few reasons, ... (1) to avenge last year's blowout loss (2) to show that they are improving (3) to see a team with a similar offense to what they will see in week 5 against South Laurel (4) to get them back to .500 (5) and to get back to back wins.

Nice job guys!

By my numbers, I am estimating that Maggard is averaging over 100 yards per game and this is the first Jag to do this since Blair graduated in 2004. They needed to find a go to back, and I believed he would be that player all along!

Convincing win for the JAGS

Things starting to look up for North. I here there middle school program is pretty good this year and they have a big game against Corbin middle this thursday night at North.

Both better come to play or it will be a long night for one of them.
