If Clemson or Washington lose, what happens?

Featured Replies

Sorry, my post was assuming both lost.

If only one loses, it simply guarantees Ohio State is in.

OSU is already in.

OSU and Michigan rematch would draw the highest rating of any playoff game, followed by OSU and a Bama rematch.

OSU/ Michigan Part 2 would be the most watched non Super Bowl sporting event of all time.

Exaggerate much? :lol2:

I'm not 100% convinced, specifically if Penn State wins.

In America of course. Haha but I really think it would be.

We just had the Cubs game 7 in the WS.

It'd be big, but biggest of all time? Hardly.

I love baseball. The Cubs were a fantastic story, but this is football and football moves the needle more than baseball. Add in Ohio State who whether you like it or not, moves the needle more than any other team if you look at TV ratings. Add in the greatest rivalry in all of sports and I see no way it doesn't earn a 30+ rating easily.

I took a look at this to get a glimpse of what type of number we are talking. This is crazy, but of the top 20 most watched programs of all time, 19 of them are Superbowls. The exception (which apparently tOSU/Mich. would surpass) is the finale of M*A*S*H which drew 105.9 million viewers. That ain't happening, btw.

In 2016, the most watched program was of course the Superbowl, with 2 of the Presidential debates coming in 2nd and 3rd. The Superbowl post-game show came in 4th. Cubs/Indians game 7 was 6th at 40.5 million viewers.

I'm not comparing it to M*A*S*H or presidential debates I said most watched American sporting event that wasn't a super bowl.

Fair enough. Well, if tOSU/Mich round 2 more than doubles it's viewership, it will be close to cracking the top 10 all time MNF football rankings...

NFL: 1 Most Watched Monday Night Football Games of All Time

NFL is a pillar. I had no idea they got that kind of ratings for MNF. That's incredible. But Ohio State/ Oregon got an 18.6 2 years ago. The Cubs/Indians was a 25.6 and the Yankees/ D-Backs was a 27.0. I think Ohio State/ Michigan part 2 for a national championship gets around that number. But then again I think differently than most people and I'm a diehard CFB fan. But I loved the Bama/ LSU rematch a few years back, but a lot of people didn't.

NFL numbers are insane. Those are just MNF numbers. Conference Championship games get HUGE numbers as well.

In short, maybe if you exclude any NFL game, this game would be up there, but keep in mind that viewership for sporting events like the World Series back in the day drew massive numbers. With more saturation the chances of it cracking the top 50 by your criteria would be astonishing I would say. :D

OSU is gonna drop from 2 to 5 with their body of work? No way.

I think what helped the OSU title game out 2 years ago more than it being OSU was the fact it was the first championship game in the playoff system.

I agree a rematch of OSU and Michigan would get good ratings. However I think you overestimate how much others care about the rivalry outside of UM and OSU fans. People care more about watching 2 great teams and games they don't usually get to see year to year. Which is why I think a OSU Bama title game would get higher rankings than an OSU Michigan rematch.
