For those of us not in the know, why is Sam Harp such a big deal? From reading previous posts I assume he was the head coach the years Danville was a power house?

 

From 1988-2012

 

7 State Titles (Class 2A '89, '91, '92, '94. Class 1A '00, '01, '03)

3 State Runner-Ups (Class 2A '98. Class 1A '04, '06)

 

Danville previously had won three state titles in '64, '84 & '87.

 

He took a corvette and turned it into a Maserati. He also won at Anderson County before going to Danville. I think he won Anderson's first region championship in '87.

 

Career record 326-106 in 32 years as a HSHFB in Kentucky. He currently is 5th on the All-Time wins list in Kentucky & of that current Top 10 list, he is still tied for the most state titles (Mike Glaser won 7 at St.X).

 

Things didn't start out pretty for him in his early years as he was the HFC at Calloway County, and went through some tough times. He ended up doing pretty well. :thumb:

He followed Tom Duffy at Danville. Duffy had won state titles in '84 and '87 and had made the State Semi-finals in '86. He left to go to HHS.

 

Sam came in with a depleted roster, went 0-3 at the start of the season, and then took the Ads to the State Semi-Finals by the end of the year.

 

He is a great coach. From '89 to '94 Danville had some of the finest teams in the state regardless of class. He reinvented himself around 2000 and took them back to four more title games, winning three of them.

So does that mean Chuck Smith and Bob Beatty arent good coaches. Maybe stick them where there is no talent and really see. Send them to Berea and find out how good they are.

Boyle County wasn't really a hot spot for high school football when Chuck Smith arrived. Boyle's record BC (Before Chuck) is listed below. Chuck was 7-4 his first season after inheriting a 2-8 club and made the State Semi's on year 5. He built Boyle at the grade school level and paid off 8 years later with the start of State Championships. Yes he had talent, but Chuck molded that talent and kept it from walking the hallways. No doubt in my mind, giving the time he could turn Berea around!

I would add gat those 1988 to 1991 were far and away the Worst Boyle County teams I ever saw in my lifetime.
