Fall Break Is All For Me!

Featured Replies

See I disagree. I have friends whom I went to college with that are recruiters. Majority say the same thing "can't keep them in college" meaning our kids get their then go home not finishing their obligations. Just my opinion and I think it's direct correlation with incidents like fall break. Not just fall break. Seems to me we don't t take football as serious as other places do.

Same here and played all through my years of college, and that's not the answers I get. I get answers like, "The Class 2A 100 M Track Champion who also is an all-conference/even state type of player here, doesn't even make it to the State Meet in other states."

Kids have gotten homesick and left camp/college for years, from all over the country. That's not just a Kentucky problem.

Just telling ya. A whole lot of places could do something football related every single day of every single year, and it would make absolutely ZERO difference in that landscape of getting to big time D1 programs. None.

The trump card, and people don't want to admit it, is nothing more than population and specifically, the demographics within those population(s). Remove the State of Atlanta-Metro from Georgia; transplant it in Kentucky and see how it changes. As a matter of fact, look at where the vast majority of big time recruits are located in Georgia....it's not the North side, that's for sure...and, they play by the same rules as the rest of the state.

We can start practice July 10th, which means that schools who open up Week 0 get SEVEN weeks of practice before their first game; EIGHT weeks, obviously for those who open up Week 1. We have Spring Practice--a football recruiting hot bed in Ohio does not get it (granted we should be allowed to play a game vs an outside opponent IF that's what the teams feel is best). We play 10 regular season games & allow dang near everyone to get in the playoffs, so most all play 11 games. 15 games total by those that make the finals.

We don't get to do 7v7 in June (which, I agree is wrong for those who want to do so).

You have places in the Mid-Atlantic up through the North/Northeast that don't start practice until August 1st (even some in the south, I think FLA's official "practice" date is August 1st) or LATER (look up Delaware, Massachusetts, CT and even Long Island in NY who play by their own set of rule). Their seasons start Labor Day weekend or the week after that (NFL opening weekend), and only play 8-9 regular season games. Michigan is another state that doesn't start practice until August 1st. NONE of the state's I mentioned have Spring Practice, either.

I know it's a popular thing to say in that Kentucky doesn't take it as seriously as most, but I'm not sure how much real truth there is to that when you weigh everything out.

What needs to happen is every school has the same fall break in the state and every team needs to have their bye week scheduled for the week of fall break. KHSAA needs to mandate that no practices can happen during fall break. These are 14-18 year old kids and coaches spend tons of time away from their families during the season and everybody needs time to recharge their batteries. It would be great if somehow fall break and bye week happened and teams were able to start district play right after that. Or have a non-district game after fall break then begin district play.

There is no excuse for parents to schedule a vacation during fall break if the coach is clear on his policy. Many parents prove that they don't care about the team and only about themselves and their kids which is the reason why many good coaches don't coach anymore.

Do away with full week fall and spring break. AT MOST have a Friday/Monday for spring break, no fall break is needed at all.

Summer vacation is the time for just that, vacation. Plenty of other family time can be planned for those that want to at Thanksgiving and Christmas. As was mentioned above, you have Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Veterans day (I think schools get off for that?) and Christmas break...not to mention professional development days where the kids are out of school. All of that between the start of school and the first of the year, then fall break too?

And at the end of the season, everyone should get a trophy and their records should be 10-0...

Because that's what he said :ohbrother:

Kids attend school roughly 171 days per year (it's actually measured by hours I believe, but that's the rough equivalent). Why do people care so much about when they go and don't? If they go 171 straight days and then take 194 straight days off, who cares? As long as they are going when they are required I just cannot fathom the complaints about this.

You are right I apologize Fall Guy...I read the first part and not the second...obviously State can't mandate school calendars and Fall Break will become a problem as Spring break has for some Spring sports.

Maybe KY HS can start doing what they do in baseball and travel south to play a football game.

Simply because some of us (myself included of course) think, especially with fall break, it's just a dumb idea and no need for it at all.

The following is anecdotal:

As a school teacher, my students are with me for nine weeks before fall break. By the 8th or 9th week, the new has worn off the school year. Class participation starts to wane, behavior problems increase, test scores drop. After a week off, all of those things improve. This week, our return week, has been wonderful. It will stay like this for a while. Then it will be time to get away again.

Now is this Pavlovian? Maybe. They know a break is coming so perhaps they zone out or act up. But I really believe that one week away does wonders for a kid's mind, health, and overall well-being, even if they don't go to Florida.

I'm with you. Those breaks are needed. It refreshes not only the teachers but the students as well. The discipline referrals always go up as the year progresses. After a break there is a sharp decline in those.

I should have read this before I posted.

Excellent post.
