Jumper_Dad Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 Barack Obama: America will take the giant leap to Mars - CNN.com This week, we'll convene some of America's leading scientists, engineers, innovators and students in Pittsburgh to dream up ways to build on our progress and find the next frontiers. Just five years ago, US companies were shut out of the global commercial launch market. Today, thanks to groundwork laid by the men and women of NASA, they own more than a third of it. More than 1,000 companies across nearly all 50 states are working on private space initiatives. We have set a clear goal vital to the next chapter of America's story in space: sending humans to Mars by the 2030s and returning them safely to Earth, with the ultimate ambition to one day remain there for an extended time. Getting to Mars will require continued cooperation between government and private innovators, and we're already well on our way. I for one am happy to read this this morning...I think our country has been at it's best when united in a common purpose...whether it is in war, going to the moon, mourning loss or coming together during disasters.
UKMustangFan Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 This is fascinating to think about. Mind-boggling that this really could happen in my lifetime.

HammerTime Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 Cool, lets ship all HRC supporters to one planet. Ship all the Trump supporters to another. And leave the rest of us normal folks here. :bunny:
Jumper_Dad Posted October 11, 2016 Author Posted October 11, 2016 Two and a half year round trip...plus time on station once they reach Mars.
Jumper_Dad Posted October 11, 2016 Author Posted October 11, 2016 I'd have to think this would make the trip a bit quicker....NASA tested an 'impossible' engine that travels faster than the speed of light | Daily Mail Online
TheDeuce Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 We've got enough problems here... Why in the hell would I want to go to Mars?
Jumper_Dad Posted October 11, 2016 Author Posted October 11, 2016 We've got enough problems here... Why in the hell would I want to go to Mars? There are always going to be problems...at work, school, politics, just life in general. That doesn't mean we should just give up on continuing to move forward, who knows maybe some solutions to problems here...could be solved by going there.
JDEaston Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 Who's going to finance this? Obama? If he's willing to pay the tab (which obviously he can't afford to) then I'm all for it. Otherwise I can think of a lot better things the massive amount of money this will cost could be used for. Our infrastructure is crumbling away as I type this.
