Would have liked to see a little more distance for Bardstown, but a nice win nonetheless and another win that cements them as a Top 10 resume type of team in 3A

 

Take away the two first-half turnovers by the Tigers and this game could have had a running clock. Bardstown has lots of ways to beat you.

Armour ran for 241 yards. Obeng went for 102. Bardstown tallied 474 yards of offense while E'town managed just 77. Very impressive defensive performance.

I don't know. It's tough for me to gauge it since I only get to see local teams and who they play. I do know this is the best Bardstown team in the 10 years I've been watching them up close. There is a buzz locally about them among folks who know what state contender teams look like. I'll know a lot more in 2 weeks when I trek up to St. Matthews to see them against Waggener.

The talent level is certainly good enough to make a run at a state championship game. Avoiding injuries is crucial, the Tigers only have 8 juniors and 4 sophomores. Avoiding what I call the "basketball bug" is also crucial, as some players have a tendency to lose passion as basketball season nears. Bu they can run it, throw it, and make things happen on defense. Everybody keeps saying Central is down, Boyle County is down, etc. etc. (I don't know I haven't watched them). If that is the case, maybe a rematch with Lex.Cath. in region game? Who knows, way too early.

This was a good win for Bardstown. They were 4 TD's better than E-Town, but only played well enough to win by 2 TD's. Not pretty, but it was a win.

 

Impressed by several things: First, it was tied at half and Bardstown had not played particularly well. Couple of interceptions, allowed one drive, just generally like we were kind of playing around and not to our potential. In the past, I have seen some Bardstown teams fold when that happens, but the body language of the sideline was as if the game was never in doubt.

 

Second, it had been nearly a month since the starters had played in the second half, and there was some cramping, some injuries, some missed assignments, etc. They were able to suck it up and paste a team that beat them 38-7 last year.

 

Third, the first 3 games the passing game was clicking and we relied on it. Wasn't there tonight. Good to know that when the chips are down, we can turn the run pounding it game, and alternate Obeng and Armour to do what needs to be done. Armour nearly 200 yards on the ground, mostly to the edge, Obeng over 100 yards, all up the middle.

 

Finally, 2nd half defense was stout. Whatever doubts about the "soft middle" of the Tiger defense were dispelled by the the aggression in the 2nd half. E-Town was 21 carries for 65 yards tonight, and Tigers had 4 sacks.

 

A major difference maker tonight was Greg Maddox back at right guard. He is 6'4" and 380 pounds and he can move. He has been out the whole preaseason and first 4 weeks with a summer injury he suffered, but tonight it was as if a tidal wave was blocking from the right side of the line. Difference maker.

 

Another guy who was outstanding tonight was #23 FB/LB Thomas Bowling. Tom is going to EKU next year as a preferred walk-on as a long snapper, but when things were muddled tonight he came in and owned E-Town as a lead run blocker. Very steady, Mr. Dependable, there when we need him.

 

I hate giving up the key players, but at this point the opponents are going to see it on HUDL so there's really no hiding them.

 

I still do not know based upon tonight whether the pieces are there to contend with the upper crust elites, but the murmurs in the crowd were "this is a pretty good team," and "maybe we've got something here."

 

Business first, on to Henry County.
