Beechwood 29 Somerset 7

Featured Replies

Final per the Beechwood Authority.

Interested to read details, only got to listen to last few minutes when the Tigers got last 2 scores.

Somerset defense on the field way too much. Beechwood just punches you in the mouth over and over again.

Somerset played their first higher quality opponent and lost by 3 TD margin. Still have a long way to go.

Big Improvement for the Tigers. That looked like some Beechwood football tonight.

Beechwood took a big step forward in this game. Their defense was just as good as it was last week versus Lloyd but the offense is where the Tigers looked much better. Perhaps some credit should go to Lloyd's defense for stuffing the Beechwood running game last week, or perhaps the Tigers' young line is making big improvements.

Beechwood took the opening kickoff and was moving the ball until #5 Ty Tevis stepped in and made a nice interception for Somerset at the 34. Somerset went 3 and out on offense and Beechwood went right back to work on their second possession. QB Brayden Burch threw a long ball down the middle and Beechwood's Daniel Mescher out fought the defender for the ball then broke free and ran into the end zone for a 55 yard TD reception. Mescher added the extra point and it was 7-0 Beechwood at the 5:18 mark. Somerset again went 3 and out. Beechwood showed no let up in their third possession going on a 58 yard drive finished off by a 1 yard Logan Castleman TD with 1:10 left in the first quarter. Mescher's XP made it 14-0. This time Somerset responded. They picked up a first down in drive started at the Beechwood 47 following a penalty on the kick return. Then Somerset ran a nice stop and go route that caught the Beechwood corner off guard. QB Mason Reese's pass went for a 34 yard TD to an open receiver in the end zone on the last play of the first quarter. Cameron Sneed added the XP to make the score BW 14 Somerset 7.

Beechwood's offense kept the momentum going and Daniel Mescher converted a 30 yard field goal with 8:42 left in the half to give BW a 17-7 lead. Somerset picked up a first down or two then Elijah McKenney made another fantastic interception at the 31 yard line to get the ball back for the Tigers. I might say this every week - McKenney is as good as it gets on cover technique in high school football. Somerset's defense rose to the need and forced the first BW punt of the night. Then BW forced another 3 and out to get the ball right back. The Tigers moved the ball a little before punting and then Somerset took a knee to end the half.

Somerset opened the second half in the power I playing smash mouth football and trying to spring their quick little back Jordan Doan for a big run. Doan found a couple seams for nice pickups and Skylar Brown had couple nice runs on dive plays. BW then brought in Trevor Soward, their MLB who is nursing an injury, and he immediately made two tackles on up the middle runs leading the Tiger defense to stopping Somerset on downs at the 29. Beechwood started playing their own version of run the ball at you, moving downfield methodically and using clock. However, a fumble at the 23 recovered by #12 Chase Madden ended the Tiger drive. BW's stalwart defense was back in force and Somerset went 3 and out for the fourth time in seven possessions.

As the game moved to the fourth quarter, Beechwood went back to the grinding running game and this time marched into the end zone when James Davis powered in for the score from 11 yards out with 7:16 to go in the game. The missed XP left the score 23-7. Somerset had to go back to the air with time short and Logan Castleman, not to be outdone by McKenney, picked off his second pass in two games. Beechwood plodded their way into the end zone after a 63 yard drive, Davis scoring this time from 12 yards out with 1:56 to go. The XP was missed and that set your final score: Beechwood 29 Somerset 7
