How Do High School Football Bowl Games Work?

Featured Replies

As I prepare to go drop $50 to get my family into a high school football game tonight, I'm curious how high school bowl games work.

Who gets the gate money, etc?

For example, I'm going to the Bob Allen Pigskin Classic tonight in Danville. It'll be $10 at the gate, even for students and young children. Personally, I think it's the ultimate rip off. But I am curious as to how those things are generally set up so I can feel better about dropping $70-80 on a high school football game.

Pike County Bowl splits the profits up evenly among all the Pike County Schools.

They also give every team participating game jerseys. Most teams use that jersey as practice jerseys moving forward.

One regular season football is $5.

Most bowl games offer two games and for that reason they are $10.

Bowl games sometimes offer a payout to the other three participating teams. I'd say the price is also used to cover expenses like programs, bowl game tee shirts, etc. It isn't cheap to put on a bowl game but if done right all money spent to put it on can be recouped.

I think I might wade across the creek and come up the river bank on the other side tonight. Don't tell anyone

I could be wrong, but I also think Danville uses this as a major fundraiser for all their school sports. So your $10 isn't just going to football, but to all other sponsored sports. It's still pretty expensive, though.

I like this plan of attack.

I'm praying my coaches pass gets me and Mrs Lawnboy in to the NewCath/Cooper game tonight.....it's part of the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown.

When the Correll Bowl was held, the 3 local schools spilt gate ($5-8,000) and fourth team was paid $2-3,000 I think for playing in it.
