Essentially. However, word is that the 85% was just arrived at recently by the Chargers. Bosa's camp wants 100% this year.

This is yet another example of how a player probably wants to get into camp and would take the deal but he's go this agent in his ear telling him he can't so he trusts him.

It's a dance. Agent doesn't want to give in because other agents will use it against him with other players in the future.

If you gave Bosa truth serum I say he's ready to take the deal.

I agree

Both parties agreed to the $$$$ and length of the contract in the Bosa negotiations, just couldn't agree to the payment schedule.

So the Bosa issue is that the Chargers wanted to give him 85% of his signing bonus now and 15% in March 2017...both of which were guaranteed and he couldn't accept that?

Is that really what it came down to?

It's about the offset language. If, for whatever reason, Bosa were to be released by the Chargers during the guaranteed portion of his contract, they'd no longer be obligated to pay him the second part of his signing bonus, which would seem to not make it a signing bonus at all.

Bosa's people have already said they're fine with the deferred payment if the Chargers take the offset language out of the contract.

Joey Bosa ain't getting released during the guaranteed portion of the contract.

This is a move by his agent with the benefit of future prospective clients in mind. He doesn't have Bosa's best interests in mind here.

He's losing a ton of money with each passing day this continues.

This is the reason that I almost don't blame Bosa's camp.

I don't blame the Chargers for wanting the offset in the deal because they've done it with every player they've given a signing bonus to since they were burned by the Ryan Leaf pick.

I don't blame Bosa's camp because when a team calls something a signing bonus and offers it as such then says part of it actually isn't a signing bonus but some sort of deferred pay based on whether or not the player works out wouldn't work for me either.

Nobody's to blame. It's the nature of contracts.

He is in a tough position. If he doesn't take the offer people will say he is greedy. If he takes it with the offset language, he will set a precedent that rookies should accept that clause, which will hurt future players negotiating ability and angering the players union.

This will have to be addressed in the new CBA and it will be a serious point of contention. Sucks for Bosa that SD ownership is using his career to make this point.

Jameis Winston had both deferred bonus and offset language in his deal last year. You didn't hear him complain about it. This is nothing more than Joey Bosa getting horrible advice from his representation.

Jameis had to take what he could get, Joey isn't in that position.

How do you figure?

Every top 5 since 2012, except Jameis, and Zeke this year, has had one of the two. I'm in the Bosa camp here. The Chargers are making him out to be the bad guy. Why would he want to play for that team? Clearly they think he is one of the best players in the draft but won't budge even a bit for him?

I assume he's meaning that the Bosa family is in a lot better situation financially but not sure.

I wouldn't budge either. He's got a finite number of years to his NFL life. If he wants to waste one of those pouting over something as trivial as this, that's his choice. Chargers aren't going to be hurting at all because of it. Only person being harmed is Bosa. He's getting horrible advice. His agent is toying with his career for his own personal reputation.

The Chargers are absolutely hurting because of this. Let's say he actually does hold out all year and re-enter the draft next year. The Chargers wasted a top 3 pick and a top 5 talent from this year's rookie class. What kind of message does that send to your fans? What about next year's rookie that gets drafted by them? Different situation but you of all people should know what it's like to not have a 1st round pick on your roster. I'm not saying it's all the Chargers fault because some of it lays on his shoulders but being out this long as a rookie puts him so much farther behind in a premier position in today's NFL.

Doesn't have much of an impact from what I've seen....:D

That's why I put the emphasis on the different situations :lol2:. Well run organization, one of greatest coaches of all time, one of the greatest QB's of all time, one of the best owners in the league, Pats can survive without a 1st round pick because of the way the franchise has been built.
