Any scenario where a conference #2 makes playoffs?

Featured Replies

What if Ohio St or Michigan end the season with only one loss, to the other one, and ranked in top 5 ahead of TCU and UCLA...would the Big 10 get 2 teams in?

What if undefeated Alabama or Tennessee lose to the other one in the SEC title game and end the season with 1 loss and ranked ahead of let's say Pacific winner UCLA. Should they get in the playoffs if they are clearly better than UCLA or another conference winner?

I think so, if they are head and shoulders above one or two of the conference winners.

This was discussed earlier this week. Most feel the committee will do everything in their power to prevent two teams from the same conference making the Final Four.

Extremely unlikely given the setup. Would have to be a situation in which the two teams played a close game the first time around and the other conferences have beaten each other up and there's no clear No. 4 team.

Like Bugatti said, the committee will do absolutely everything possible to avoid placing two teams from any league into this playoff.

If it's going to happen it will be this year. The SEC is going to have 3 really good teams (Bama, LSU, Tenn.) Lets say Bama beats LSU but loses to Tennessee. LSU beats Tennessee in Champ game, but its a really close game so each team only has one loss. Same with the B1G. 3 really good teams (OSU, MSU, and Mich.) They beat up on each other and all end the season with one loss. Obviously the winner of both champ games gets in, but lets say the Pac 12 and Big 12 champ have 2 losses. I say its a no brainer. I think the ACC, SEC, and B1G champs are locks. The 4th spot is up for grabs between probably Okla., TCU, UCLA, and Stanford.

I think Florida State and Clemson have a shot to both make the playoff.

I know FSU has a lot of talent, but what about the QB? I'm not super sold on them yet, but we'll find out the first week if they are legit or not.

16 teams stops all this nonsense.

I like 8 a lot better than 16. Only 1 extra game per team and the regular season still has a lot of significance.

16 and cut one game from the regular season.

Won't happen. Not without an undefeated and one loss from a conference and the rest of the teams having multiple losses, like more than 2.

A lot of folks seem very high on Tennessee, and I think they're a top 15 team, but I'm not seeing title contender. I think it's more likely they lose to Alabama twice than beat them even once.

I think you're probably right. But I would say the odds of the Pac 12 and Big 12 champs both having 2 losses are pretty decent. I think Stanford and UCLA are the top 2 out in the Pac 12 and they are both unproven teams except for McCaffrey and Rosen. Okla. is the favorite in the Big 12 but they have Houston, Ohio St. in non conference and the had a loss to a bad Texas team last year so I expect at least one let down loss from them again this year. This really leaves the door open to 2 B1G, 2 SEC, or 2 ACC schools.

UT's schedule breaks for them, but they still feel like a team that is going to let you down when you need them the most. I am pumped to see what the game looks like in Bristol vs. Virginia Tech.

Like Bugatti said above me I think most people just think their schedule works out for them. I don't think they'll beat Bama, but at home I think it will be close. I definitely don't see title contender either, but if they can get into the SEC championship, IMO it would be a total failure if they don't, anything can happen. They have a much better shot at LSU in the champ than Bama, but who knows. I think Tennesses only shot is to hope Bama struggles offensively and they can catch them in a low scoring game sort of like last year at Tuscaloosa where they would have beat them if Derrick Henry hadn't broke that big run.

There's no doubt Jones has got talent there. He's been stockpiling huge classes since he showed up in Knoxville. While he was close at Bama last year, the Vols had no business dropping those games to Arkansas and Florida. I see why people are high on them, but it seems like every year they just give a couple away. It was a problem for Jones at Cincinnati too.
