August 18, 201610 yr NOTE: I have never hunted, but how much meat can possibly be on these little fella's? One fox (red/brown) squirrel can feed two people with beans, mash potatoes ect ect. One gray squirrel can feed 2 or less people with sides. It all depends what you do with the meal, gravy can extend the number of people to feed.
August 18, 201610 yr Well bag limit is (6) and being from Southeastern Ky, growing up only killed 1 fox squirrel ever. Then we moved to louisville area and the fox squirrels over run the greys. Greys are lot easier to clean, and fix in my opinion. If it is a young squirrel I fix them in a skillet, and fry them like a porkchop. Older then I make them with squirrel gravy and cornbread, my son who is 11 loves it more than any other hunting and his 410 will be ready Saturday morning. Miss those days especially Labor day weekend when it became a family contest. I have cleaned over 40 in a day so that should tell you we loved eating the tree rat
August 18, 201610 yr Author I ain't eatin' no damn squirrel. If you're eating squirrels, you're just bored. Nah man, it's not that....it's like part of your heritage. It was passed on to me and I have passed it on. It was the first game animal I ever took, and my Dad found it important enough to have that little rat stuffed. I still have it almost 40 years later, one of my greatest "trophies". I can't wait until Saturday AM. Mrs. BB has somewhere to be and I'm out early in the woods seeing what I can drop. I get pretty jacked up seeing and hearing those little guys drop from up on high....I would say my Saturday brunch will include gravy and pepper :thumb:
August 18, 201610 yr For a lot of country boys squirrel hunting is their first official hunt. Get to carry a gun, get to slip off on your own, it's a big deal to kids who grow up around it. I can still hear my heart pounding seeing that hickory limb dancing in the morning stillness. That single shot 410 was really a Browning 12ga in my eyes. I'm still suprised to this day that the wood lot that doubled as a cow pasture even has a squirrel left in it.

Rabbit (Eastern Zone) - Open from November 1 until January 31, except the season is closed during the first two days of modern gun deer season. Rabbit (Western Zone) - Open from the third day of modern gun deer season through Feb. 10 Quail (Eastern Zone) - Open from November 1 until January 31, except the season is closed during the first two days of modern gun deer season.
