Scheduling Grid

That argument makes sense, but the flip side is this: I think some of the better teams are going to have more trouble finding games for weeks 10 and 11 than they would in August and September. Who's going to want to play Bowling Green or Trinity or Danville or Belfry the week before the playoffs?

The other better teams that also cannot find anyone else to play them would be an obvious answer to your question.

My guess is that Highlands, St X, CovCath, Lex Cath, Bell, John Hardin etc would all be in the same boat as the teams you mentioned and be willing to play them.

Heck, I'd think a Boyle vs Danville game at the end of the season would really pack them in.

I don't think the fact that a tough game at the end of the season adversely affects teams getting ready for the playoffs, or at least it hasn't hurt Highlands or CovCath who have played each other the last week the last couple of years.

Some coaches may think a tough game right before the playoffs actually helps them get ready for the playoffs.

That sounds good in theory, but I suspect it won't be implemented very often.

I'm curious to know why you feel that way. If all the tough teams can't find sisters of the poor willing to play them, will they have any choice but to play one another?

The fact that everybody has the same weeks open to schedule would help the odds of finding the type of opponent you're looking for, or so it seems to me.

I know everyone has their own preferences but Belfry traditionally likes to have a tough game late. They always played Ironton OH in week 10.

I suspect that a lot of teams in that situation would prefer not to travel that far to find teams in similar circumstances for the final game of the regular season. Just an observation.

One potential problem ... programs in five-team districts that don't have a district game scheduled will have their options severely limited.

You may be right but I don't see how it is different from the first 2 or 3 weeks of the season. Traditionally nobody starts their district schedule until they have a couple of games under their belts.

In a five-team district, the team that has the first week off, so to speak, has more scheduling options because many other districts have not started their district games yet.

Later in the season (weeks 5, 7 and 9), once everyone is in district play, the options become more limited.

I see your point and agree that it is something that we will have to watch play out as it might make it difficult for the odd man out on a given week to find a suitable game.

However, there are a lot of 5 team districts that will have a team in the same situation as you, on the same week (since everyone will be following the same grid). And if you can't play one of them then you have to have an open week somewhere.

I think this actually the best thing to come out of the 6 class system so far. It seems to me that scheduling will be made much easier. Teams won't have to make a mad dash to try and schedule up everyone as soon as they can. I wouldn't be opposed of a schedule that had maybe the first 4 weeks as non district and maybe the last week as non district. That would leave 5 games to play in the middle of the season and every district could fit thier district games in there. Teams could play at least 4 games to prepare for district play then another at the end of the year to prepare for the playoffs.

The only thing that could screw up this type of scheduling would be when do teams take bye weeks?

Traditional matchups like Danville vs. Boyle and Trinity vs. X could still be played in their normal slots of week 3 or 4 I think.

Won't be a problem for 5 team districts. Already worked into rotation.

Looks like a HOLMES/HOLY CROSS game week 11 every year.

If I am not in 5 team district the question is when do I schedule Bye. a couple schools of belief here. Some would say if I am looking at a tough regular season. Do I a) schedule bye for last week to rest my guys going into playoffs or b) do I schedule a bye earlier and keep my guys focused?

:argue:

Let the disagreements begin

I say do away with the Bye week and start the regular season a week later. That way border schools can schedule teams from other states especially Ohio and West Virginia.

But I also would allow some schools to start the season as they do now if they are schedule in a Bowl game and only a Bowl game.
