Sen Cruz Podcast

I'll put this in the Politics thread.

I listened to a podcast with Sen Cruz. Podcast is called Off Message.

A few things:

He says he modeled his campaign off of President Obama's first campaign in regards to analytics. He had his senior staff read David Plouffe's book on the campaign.

He says that the media got Trump over the top with free advertising. He valued it at $3B and said that the media decision makers are liberal HRC supporters who want Trump as the opponent so HRC can win. Said the media was also in bed with HRC over Bernie.

Says the media framed the narrative of him as a theocrat vs having a strong economic message.

Says many college kids told him they were torn between two candidates - him and Bernie.

Says he has not decided if he will vote for Trump or HRC.

Very good listen especially if you're like me in that you just wrote him off as a nut job.

I want to meet these people.

He said it made sense as he and Bernie were the "blow up Washington" candidates.

I can see how someone swept up in anti-establishment populism might be drawn to Sanders or Trump, who would otherwise be strange bedfellows. But Cruz and Sanders?! I think drugs would have to be involved to make that work. :lol2:

How deep do you have to be into the misogyny and hate of the most virulent Bernie Bro groups to be a Sanders guy then move all the way to Ted Cruz?

I do agree with him that free media helped propel Trump's campaign. But I think it was due to a ratings bias moreso than a liberal one. Trump's crazy statements, unscripted soliloquies, and general entertainment savvy drew eyeballs and clicks in a way the media couldn't stand to turn away from. I'm as guilty as anyone. I'll stop and watch a Trump clip with a gawking fascination.

I agree. His argument is that coming out of 5 straight wins the media kept saying that it was over. He says he spent $10M to $15M on Indiana but Trump got about $300M in free advertising.

Loser's limp? Maybe.

The left media had 2 phases to the Trump coverage.

Phase 1. The left media thought it was a joke so they played along getting any and all sound bits to help ratings.

Phase 2. The left media once Trump turned the corner and looked a like a true contender against HRC, cranked up coverage even more trying to discredit him even more.

So yes, they created the monster then tried to destroy the monster.

Sen Cruz agrees and disagrees.

He says there were/are two phases.

1. Get Trump to be the nominee by giving him air time

2. Once he got the nomination start hammering him with negative coverage.

It's also my recollection that in the early stages of the campaign Trump's lead in the polls were often brushed off as a flash in the pan, similar to other candidates' temporary leads in the last primary, and even as the campaign trudged on the conventional wisdom was that Bush, then Rubio, would be the eventual nominees. Besides giving him more coverage than the less entertaining candidates, the media's biggest failing was constantly reminding people he didn't have a chance.

The media has been seizing on his controversial statements for the entirety of his campaign, going back to his campaign announcement when he invoked Mexico sending rapists across the border. There's no question he got a tremendous [Trump voice] amount of free media, including little perks like being able to call into news shows that seemed unusual, but his coverage was never favorable or puffed up.

What was the Conservative media's response to Trump? I very rarely watch or listen, so I honestly don't know.

It was similar to the left to start out but changed quicker to supporting him.

I didn't listen or read Cruz'so thoughts.

The left were more concerned with Marco, so playing the Trump card early was in an effort to move voters towards a candidate that had no chance to beat HRC. It snowballed from their.

Cruz never had even a remote chance to win. Skilled politician but the right base not looking for a career politician this go round.

The media controls so much of our countries moods and attitudes, before the 24 hour news cycle started, I had no idea the bias I see in news coverage.

What was that movie? Wag the Dog
