July 20, 201610 yr I have had to opportunity to interact with several professional athletes while they were still active. John McEnroe, Darrell Dawkins and George Gervin are the ones that I can remember off the top of my head. I am on a first name basis with Denny Crum although I still choose to call him Coach.
July 20, 201610 yr Amazing we have multiple members so closely tied to some of the sickest individuals to breathe air. Amazing, but not exactly shocking...
July 20, 201610 yr Frank Thomas hit a homerun in the 2nd game of a double header with Auburn over my head in CF that might still be going. Separated indeed.
July 21, 201610 yr 1. My Dad was stationed at Muroc Army Air Corps base during WWII and just after. Chuck Yeager was a test pilot there. Yeager, being from West Virginia liked to hunt. Being an officer, he would sign out a Jeep and some shot guns and shells, and take a group of guys out into the desert to hunt jack rabbits. My Dad was a farm boy from Ohio and went on several of those jaunts. Yeager's autobiography came out in 1985. My family got Dad a copy of it for Christmas that year. We gave it to him on Christmas Eve 'cause that's when we always exchanged gifts. Dad seemed real pleased when he unwrapped that one. Unfortunately, he never got to read it because he didn't wake up the next morning. 2. A friend of mine played high school basketball in Lansing, Michigan with a kid named Earvin Johnson. He later would be known as Magic, but they always just called him Earvin. My friend's job on the team was to protect Earvin from opposing players. My friend claims he held the record for fouling out of a game the quickest in the state of Michigan. He had a couple of fouls before time even started. Mischief prior to the jump ball. Took out a couple of the opposing team's players in the process. Years later when he was stationed in Texas in the Air Force the Lakers came to play San Antonio (?). My friend went to the game and Earvin saw him. Earvin took him and another friend with him clubbing after the game.
