July 2, 201610 yr In the other thread we talked about things we can't do...so let's talk about some things you had to teach yourself out of necessity. My first one is easy... Plumbing: I've figured out how to rebuild or replace the guts to a toilet, how to change out faucet fixtures, unclog via snake every drain in the house and I even saved several hundred dollars swapping out my own water heater. My dad was in bad health and passed away not long after I moved back home and bought this house...so I didn't have really anyone to ask how to do most of these things. I'm sure most took much longer than they should have. Now when something needs repairing a have my son do it and walk him through it step by step. That way his learning curve when he's on his own without me won't be as steep.
