Do your athletes seem to show up with a lot of injuries by their Junior year?

Featured Replies

Is AAU ball killing HS Basketball? Way too many kids showing up with stress and fatigue injuries into the junior year for it to be coincidence. It seems to me that athletes are not taking enough time off for their bodies to recover, and , they are focusing excessively on one sport. This is cutting HS careers short.

Too many athletes that are "specializing", playing one sport year round in my opinion. This is especially true with girls it seems. And, I would guess that the year round basketballers are the ones that are most common with the "overuse" injuries.

Specialization is the problem. summer ball gets kids the $$$ for college. If my kid had had to pick HS or summer ball id pick the latter.

And that is the problem.

Very common problem in girls sports especially. Way too much all year round and when you get no rest you see injuries increase.

I agree. I loved watching my kids play for HS team. More authentic. But if push comes to shove between the two you do what's best for your child.

Many folks assume that the AAU "season" facilitates overuse. From my experience, high school season is a much harder/longer grind. Most travel/select/AAU type teams don't practice much, and don't play every single weekend.

The June high school schedule for basketball seems to be the most time on the court my kids see all year. I don't blame the AAU season.

It's the combination of all of them. A lot of athletes play the same sport year round without muck of a rest. That is hard on the body.

There are a lot of reasons why kids get injured and in my opinion it is just not girls like people say in this thread. I have found switching from different surface gym floors is causing a lot issues. Shoes are another reason. You may buy the Stephen Curry or LeBron James shoe but let's be realistic here those shoes just have their name on them. These professional athletes do not wear their shoe alone, they have orthotics, extra padding on their insoles etc and they are not wearing the same shoe for a whole season. They probably wear a new pair of shoes every 2-3 weeks. There is so much break down in the shoes it is crazy.

HS ball is definitely more demanding than AAU ball. For those of you that would choose AAU ball over HS ball because of exposure opportunity what do think better prepares an athlete for the next level, intense HS ball, or creampuff AAU, ball?

Must not be familiar with summer ball. Both have + & - but playing against top players in the country consistently as opposed to once a year in HS is demanding. Clueless

Too much playing, not enough working out and rest are definitely factors. I also believe that some is due to physical maturation and evolving bone structure and weight distribution. Kids get older and put on weight it puts new stress on soft tissues and joints.

I understand how important it is for kids to play. Ideally they could spend more time in the weight room and resting to allow their hip/knee/ankle joints to get stronger.

this post is so incredibly bad I dont know where to start.

I would take aau ball any day over high school. Watched a bunch of high school games this week end. I felt like putting an ice pick through my forehead.
