I was just trying to mess with all the posters that whined about the Reds getting pitchers back in all the trades last year. :lol2::lol2:

The MLB amateur player draft is just a little more than two weeks away, taking place June 9-11th.

 

 

Louisville OF Corey Ray is another guy on the fringe of the Reds radar, however he's had a pretty pedestrian season all things considered.

 

UKMF - lay off the bath salts. It is impacting your cognitive abilities.

 

Ray is a stud having a great year batting leadoff and playing all 3 OF positions. Going into the ACC Tourney in 56 games and 236 ABs he is hitting .326 w/ 14 HRs, 16 2B, 57 RBI, a .581 slugging % and a .398 OBP. He also had 37 SBs in 44 attempts.

 

I'm admittedly biased, but Keith Law of ESPN has him #1 on his board above everyone you mention above.

Funk's control has been off all year. He scuffled early and then got bumped to the back of the weekend rotation when they had a SAT - SUN - MON series for ESPN (kept McKay and Harrington on their normal rest and gave Funk a few extra days of rest). Rotation stayed that way the rest of the year. He has had flashes but has not been consistently dominant as in the past.

 

From a $ standpoint he clearly guessed wrong. Part of it was that he thought he could improve with another year and part of it was not going to Omaha by 1 pitch / call last year and knowing they had a lot of talent coming back. He won't get a big signing bonus, but if he has major league stuff, getting drafted 3rd or 4th round rather than end of 1st round won't matter.

I think they go with the UL OF if he's available. Really need to beef up with some offensive talent.

I wouldn't be surprised if they went that direction, but I think he's probably #5 on their board behind Senzel, Lewis, Puk, and Perez.

Latest rumblings have the Phillies leaning towards Puk at #1. Have also seen a few places linking them to Moniak.

 

Reds are down to Senzel, Lewis, and Perez IMO. Of course that all changes if the Phillies go a different direction than Puk.

Sounds like the Reds pick with either be Senzel, or Puk. I'm really hoping the Phillies go Puk #1, so the Reds aren't tempted to draft him. Really good talent, but this team doesn't need another arm right now.

 

Draft Senzel, save a bit of money in the bonus/slot allotments and go for some bigger talents with picks #35, #43, & #79.

 

The one caveat with Senzel is that he's a Boras client, but should still go below the slot value if he's the guy at #2 IMO.

Unfortunately there isn't much "can't miss" talent in this draft, but still several quality players. It sounds like the Reds are going to take the best college bat available -- likely Senzel, but possibly Lewis.

There have been a few HS pitchers to go #1 overall, Brady Aiken did it just 2 years ago in 2014....There hasn't been a right-handed HS pitcher to ever go #1.

You're right -- I swear I heard that a HS pitcher had never gone #1 overall two separate times. Interesting to note that Aiken didn't sign out of high school, instead opting to go to IMG Academy.

If I remember correctly, he and Houston had come to an agreement on a deal, then when he went and got his physical the Astros had some concerns over his elbow. They reigned in their offer a bit, I think from like a $7-$8M to a $5-$6M offer. He balked at it and went to IMG.

 

Got drafted last year by the Indians at #17. Really never pitched for IMG as he had Tommy John surgery after like one appearance. Still hasn't pitched yet for the Indians either.

Riley Pint is a HS RHP projected to go in the top 10 or so. He is one of the subjects in a book I just read by Jeff Passan called "The Arm." Good read.
