May 6, 201610 yr Pergo Xp Laminate. Had to put it down over our hardwood cause my lab was scratching it badly. Wish I had done the laminate to start with.
May 6, 201610 yr Wife and I are looking to replace the flooring in our house. All 3 bedrooms, the hallway, the living room, and the steps to basement need to be done. It's currently carpeted, and that's what we're thinking we'll be replacing it with, but are definitely not opposed to other types of flooring. We don't want poor quality, but we're not looking to break the bank either. What are some recommendations of flooring and/or places to look into? I'd suggest using carpet in a bedroom/s if that is what you all are leaning towards. And use laminate in one or more bedrooms, living room, hall, and steps. The key factor in my suggestion is the pet factor. Laminate is so much easier to keep clean and when it comes to re-sale a better ROI. There was another thread in the recent 6 months where someone raised a similar ??? Check it out for contractor, DIY supply, recommendations.
May 25, 201610 yr Author So we've went to a handful of places and have gotten quotes, and this stuff is quite expensive. Still got a couple other places to look into. Now that I've come to terms with the relative price range we're looking at, does anyone have suggestions regarding floor weight, material (polyester vs. nylon), and the pad? We don't want to do just the standard 8lb traffic master pad, but not sure what better options we should use. Each place has given us varying answers on this.
May 25, 201610 yr Author One other question: We've decided to handle the carpet removal and furniture moving ourselves since it'll save us a lot of money. I assume it's pretty simple to rip up, but do we also have to remove the tack strips or whatever they're called as well? I'm guessing yes.
May 25, 201610 yr We just put new flooring in our house and used laminate through out except for the master bath and we used a real thick lanoleium (sp)

Im not sure, but it seems to me that if the old ones are still in useable shape after removing existing carpet you could leave them.
May 25, 201610 yr I've lived in houses with hardwoods my entire life and always had a large dog. No issues if you keep their nails trimmed and maintain the hardwood correctly. When we moved into my current house we ripped up brand new carpet in the basement and main floor. Did vinyl tiles in the basement and hardwood throughout the main floor. It's more expensive but I hate carpet -- it's tolerable in the bedroom.

New tack strips are probably included in the price you were quoted. I would call and ask them. When I had my bedrooms and basement done we left them.
