May 5, 201610 yr Vogel is one the better coaches in the league. But as PP92 hinted to this about the offensive side of the ball. It's partly what did Thibs in Chicago among a host of other things. These very good defensive minded coaches are struggling to adapt to the new offenses in the NBA. I still think this was a bad move by Bird .

This year he has already destroyed Bobby Knight (for not going back to the 40th anniversary deal honoring the undefeated 1976 IU team) and now Larry Bird. Those two are basketball royalty in Indiana. You can like or dislike Dakich, but I respect that he says what he believes and really does not care if you like it or not...
May 6, 201610 yr Bad move, don't see them bringing in anyone who can have more success. He was close to getting them to the Finals, had some battles with Miami for a few years. Really impressed me this year with what he was able to do with that team, of course you're not going to have a top 10 offense with a roster like that. That's Birds fault not Vogel, he can only play with the team Bird puts out there. He won't have trouble finding another job.

Vogel thinks that spread type offense shooting 3s leads to too many easy baskets for the opponent. Not his style. Bird wants that style.
May 6, 201610 yr Bird's quote about good coaches, in his experience, need to move every 3 or 4 years has raised a lot of eyebrows. Popovich probably disagrees. As does Red Auerbach. And Phil Jackson. "My experience has been, good coaches leave after three years." Gregg Doyel: Frank Vogel falls victim to Larry Bird's warped thinking
May 6, 201610 yr Author Correct on it being a "style" issue. Vogel thinks that spread type offense shooting 3s leads to too many easy baskets for the opponent. Not his style. Bird wants that style. Then he needs to build the personnel for that style. He doesn't have anything close to that. Everyone is trying to duplicate GS and it's not working. It's kinda hard to find two of the best shooters of all time on the same team and someone like Green.
