Bullitt East taking a different approach to spring football

Featured Replies

Apparently new Bullitt East Coach Mark Sander will take a novel approach to spring football. He informed his players that they will not even hand out equipment in the spring. They will instead use the time to evaluate players speed, agility, etc.

Any thoughts?

How many days will it take to do these evaluations?

Head Coach is still serving as AD of another school. So I am sure time is not his most abundant commodity. Who knows if he has his staff in place? Maybe he is still determining what he wants to do in terms of OC/DC? IDK. Several things could be the cause, but the root is probably that the staff is not ready to install an offense/defense/ect. You'd rather do nothing at all, than go do something half butt. If they come out and have a crappy spring, it sets the tone and will be hard to overcome. If they do relatively nothing, then at least they can set the right tone in the Fall. It may cost them a little this offseason, but if would cost them more if they didn't do it right.

I guess the big question is why are they not ready to go? I think if I was hired 2-3 months before the start of spring ball, that I would have all of those things in place and ready to move. A new Head Coach can find out a lot more about their team with 15 days of practice than they can timing 40's, L drills and vertical/broad jumps.

All of this is just a guess. I am sure there are others close to the program that may have details.

Spring football is overrated in high school period! College is better because it's a business and in high school they wouldn't have many guys that run track or play baseball.

Does Bullitt East have a bunch of football players that also play baseball/track?

I do know there are more than a few schools that do spring ball in helmets only. As a few have said, spring ball is overrated in high school. Too many kids missing because of other sports/commitments is the biggest problem. It's great to get your guys out to work on a few things, but high school seasons are not won and lost in the spring.

I do not think it is due to baseball/ track. To my knowledge most of the baseball player at BE focus so heavily on baseball that they not play football. Some run track, but probably less than most schools.

The thing that i found a bit surprising is that, having all new offensive and defensive schemes, you would not want to introduce them to the new system. I also belive that they will have a big question at most of their skilled positions. They graduated both starting RBs, they will have questions regarding two former starters at QB, and major changes on defense.

I can see how there are questions about the value of spring football in general.

Spring football is a tool but doesn't mean wins and losses. I think we view HS football like college and pro but it is not the same. If you want to do spring great, if you don't great. I don't view it was a make or break deal. We have to many things to require upon the kids anymore and that is why so many aren't playing sports.

Just my opinion, but I would let them take spring football away in exchange for 7 on 7 back in June. When Glaser was at St. X he did not do spring ball to my knowledge.

He may not have the coaching strength in place yet to hold a real spring practice? Maybe just installing new concepts for O and D? Spring practice can be overrated at a lot of schools bc of numbers. Without the ability to scrimmage another school you are limited to beating on each other for 10 days.

I think it is a lot more valuable to continue hitting the weight room hard and working on agility drills to improve players strength and quickness. In June teams get their players back and you can use that as the install time leading up to the dead period. I feel spring practice is the most beneficial to the lineman.

And beating on each other for a few days 4 months prior to the start of the season really doesn't provide much benefit. I'm not even sure beating on another team would help all that much. Spring is a great time just to keep football on guys minds, and get a little functional training, and reinforce some concepts, and get some initial ideas about personnel. Otherwise, not that big of deal.

Yep! Now, I have known some people who have more or less made it a 2-3 week linemen camp. When else are those guys THE only focus? And, it's not necessarily a lot of beat & banging with those guys..obviously some one on ones to mix it up a little..but, an overall fundamental camp. Agreed GA.

IMVHO there is little or no carryover value to full contact spring practice. 10 days in April has little or nothing to do with a team's success or lack there of in the regular season. It's a vestigial organ (much like the appendix) that has little or no use. It's just important to the "old-schoolers" that think you have to hit and hit and hit.
