Bengals reportedly interested in bringing back Taylor Mays

Featured Replies

With the departure of Emmanuel Lamur to the Minnesota Vikings, the Bengals are in need of a nickel linebacker to play opposite Vontaze Burfict.

According to Bengals.com's Geoff Hobson, Cincinnati could try and bring back one of its former players, safety-linebacker hybrid Taylor Mays.

Mays spent last season in Oakland, where he played in 14 games with the Raiders. He even made five starts opposite Charles Woodson at safety. Mays, a free agent, could've seen some interest on the open market, but a four-game suspension to start the 2016 season will likely push interested teams away. The suspension is for violating the NFL's policy on substances of abuse.

I feel like the Bengals are slumming now. Especially considering Mays will be out the first four games.

Not surprising. Every year the Bengals pick up depth in week 2 and beyond. It's why they brought LaFell in for a "look-see" today. Actually, it has been a good formula for them.

I just read the Bengals might try to sign the Dansby the LB cut from Cleveland.

I was wondering about that. Where did you read it at? Link if you have it.

Lamur only played 30 percent of the snaps last year. Mays would just be filling back into the role he had before, that Lamur took over whrnMays left.

STeelers do the same.

Dansby's best days are behind him. Mays never really developed into the player we all hoped he would based on his athleticism. I always thought that Mays never had the desire to be great.

Dansby still had a good year last year. If he would come here for cheap to play for a winning team for a year or two then I do think he could contribute. He would be the 3rd or 4th linebacker here and is an upgrade over AJ Hawk.

I'd prefer to draft a young LB and develop them, something the Bengals haven't done much of lately. The only logic to this move is as a short term fill in while Tez is out.

That is what they did with Dawson last year. As of right now their three top linebackers are Rey M, Tez, and Vinny Ray, then Dawson. With Tez being out the first three, it wouldn't be the worst thing to have another veteran like Dansby who can play all three linebacker positions. Which would be huge in case of an injury.

No Hawk?

No Hawk?

Nope he is most likely the 5th linebacker next year. If they signed Dansby he probably then would be cut.

Taylor Mays signed with the Bengals a few days ago.
