As stated earlier best high school faciltiy in this area is Portsmouth's Spartan(Universal) . Former home to the NFL and site of first night game ever in NFL history. The turf isn't what if use to be , but up til the early 80's this facility had it all for every fan , coach and player. The history in this facility is unbelieveable.

Portsmouth games on friday night and Notre Dame on saturday night was football heaven in the P Town for lot's of years ...

Thanks for the honest opinion. In return, let me say that if Russell were able to duplicate the home side stands on the visitors side (even if they didn't run the entire length of the field), and put some restrooms, concessions, and a visitors locker room underneath, Henry R. Evans would be superb.

We all know that the perfect stadium doesn't exist - at the NFL level or college level - much less at the high school level. Every field has its pluses and minuses.

I see nothing to be gained by speaking ill of any schools facilities, I just want to be there on Friday night, when Ashland, Ironton, Russell or any good team is matched up with an equally talented opponent.

I love watching two good teams go head to head. If Ashland is one of them, all the better. I think it's pretty telling at the end of the season, as our local teams are slowly eliminated from the playoffs. You then begin to see the TRUE football fans, as they immediately pick up the local teams that remain alive from week to week.

:thumb: :thumb: Niced post frances, where have you been? Haven't seen you on here in a while.

Dude, I went to New York once and it smelled really bad in downtown Manhattan around 32nd, they should shut that whole city down. Come on firebird, you've been to Putnam once. I'd say that's not much of a sample size to form such a strong opinion about a place that's been around for over 80 years. The one thing you seem to mention is how dirty it was on the visitors side with all the trash. What does that tell you? I know there are trashcans strategically placed throughout the bleachers to minimize the distance needed to throw your popcorn away, so it would seem that the visiting fans are the ones who are disrespecting the venue. Not that it doesn't happen on the other side, or any other stadium for that matter. But you better believe that there are a group of guys that are out there the following days who clean that place up and work their butts off to get it back to the level you see as simply dirty and nasty. I'm sure they appriciate your opinions on the matter. As for comparing it to Evans, there is no atmosphere that matches Putnam in HS football than the kids in maroon coming down the steps under the light in front of a packed house in a big game. I aslo don't like how everything is spread out, walking along the track to get to the concessions, and the long walk from parking. Plus the visiting seating doesn't really compare with Putnam. I'm sure it's quite dirty too, but simple metal bleachers don't show trash like concrete seating does, so I guess we're out of luck.

And talking about Alumni Gym, you are aware it has been renovated correct? It's a nice facility now that serves it's purpose well for elementary and freshman basketball games, as well as wrestling. It may not be state-of-the-art, but neither are Fenway Park or Yankee Stadium.

And Yankee Stadium was the most uncomfortable place I've ever had to sit and watch a sporting event, but it a one of a kind experience. Not to compare it directly with Ashland's venues, but they are both old and complained about, even though I would never want them to be destroyed.

Other Dude,

I am aware that popcorn boxes, cups, etc. get thrown to the ground on both sides during a game. It was before the game that I saw the junk that I saw while it was still daylight. It wasn't so much the cup, box deal as it was just plain old junk that should have been hauled off to the scrap metal yard somewhere. It wasn't like it was hidden away from view in some remote part of the stadium, it was in plain view as you entered.

Yeah I have been to Alumni since it has been "quote " renovated. I stand by my earlier comment. It's the one place that I have truely and honestly hated watching an event at.

Hey if you guys are comfortable with your place , that great. I was mostly trying to fun around with GIAT and it was honestly lighthearted comments .(He takes this stuff pretty serious you know.)But, since he has had no real dispute to my claims, then I assume that there may have been some merit to my afore mentioned comments. I'll bet the next time I visit Putnam, I'll bet that the area that I mentioned will be clean as a whistle. What do you want to bet? I'll go one step further and bet that there has already been a little spiffying up that has taken place.

I just hope that this time there is some real action footage of Dickie and crew working up those sweat beads.:D

What a great response, totally 100% correct. Must be that good Oakview Elementary and Ashland education that allows you to speak so eloquently. :thumb:

If you want history and atmosphere go to Tank or Spartan. Outside of the turf there is nothing about Putnam that is overwhelming. Maybe the odor coming from the dungeon of the so called lockerroom.
Theres no denying the locker rooms need work, ok completely renovated. But what is with the dingy smelly rest room at Evans, and the shanty they sell concessions out of, and most importantly the TURF The scoreboard is ok but I don't think it is any better than Putnams, although the fire is pretty cool. Last year I saw it almost burn down during the Greenup game (i think it was greenup) just thought I would throw that in there!! :D :D Cheer up FBALL don't knock it til you've tried it, Oh,wait a minute been there done that! Don't worry though we will still let those Nasty ole Devils use that ragged ole Putnam stadium when ever they are in need, an by the look of Henry R Evans already that could be soon!!! :D:D:p

Belfry for one. And no, I am not from Belfry.

"No real dispute to your claims"? Are you serious?

Naw, I'm not serious.

I think this is the first time I have ever agreed with firebird...:thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

The inferno at the Greenup game was pretty funny. A bird had built a nest in the wrong place.

As for not knocking it before trying it. I've been to Putnam in many times as a player, coach and fan. There has never been anything about it that I liked, except the grass. History is nice, it just doesn't impress me that much.

The inferno at the Greenup game was pretty funny.

I wonder who did that? :sssh: ;)

Hey I also forgot to mention that Steinbrenner has decided that, yes, even Putnam..er Yankee Stadium had long outlived it's usefullness . The Yankees are currently building a new stadium to replace the current Yankee Stadium.
