Last year's state champion was decided when LexCath beat Scott County in the 11th Region finals. I don't think anyone could reasonably disagree with that. Mercy was also a fine team that, unfortunately for them, drew LexCath in the first round of the state tournament. The other fourteen teams in the tournament, with a couple of exceptions, were on pretty much the same level.

 

As it turned out, Rose Hill survived to reach the finals. Our Lady Royals finished second in the state tournament and placed three on the all-tournament team- two of whom return this year. We would never try to fool ourselves, or anyone else, by saying that Rose Hill was the second best team overall. However, when it counted, our girls finished second. Our little high school of 63 takes great pride in that.

You are absolutely correct and whenever they meet this year, the result may very well be the same.

The vote they are probably talking about is for the Ky Basketball Association of Coaches or KABC. Anyone can be a member of KABC by paying their dues. It is mostly made up of HS level coaches but MS level coaches, AD's and elementary level coaches could join.

 

For the regional awards, the KABC counts the votes from their members that are in that region. On your voting form, it asks for a place to indicate what region your are voting for.

I know, I was being slightly cynical due to the nature of the posts. This issue was hashed out ad nauseum in this forum last season. Personally, I think that it was silly that Kala Faulkner wasn't named the POY, perhaps I should pay my dues, you know, jump in to the political ring of the voting folk.

Now, I wish to be clear that this is no disrespect to Miss Rayburn from West. Only that IMO Miss Faulkner was clearly the regions best. The hard feelings toward her school and history was a deterrent to her winning IMO.

That's my fault. Jay Bilas said that Rose Hill wasn't shorthanded last year and justified the statement by saying that they argueably had the best three players in the region. Yet none of them were named POY.

Counting tournaments, several, and not just the RH girls either. I'm curious Jay, if you had a vote, who would you have voted for?

Faulkner was key to RH winning the region. She will be very hard to replace.

Rayburn was a talent but at times got lost in the 3ball scheme at West.

It will be an interesting race this season with at least 5 D1 talents in the senior class.

Commonwealthwide: Lexington Catholic should win with Scott County close on their heals. Many take shots at LexCath. I prefer to recognize that they are the best. Apparently, they play within the rules because with all the backbiting and whining from their adversaries, they have been scrutinized more than any other program. The only way that they could be watched any closer would be if they were in the 64th District.

 

16th Region: Russell with Rose Hill, Raceland, and West Carter in pursuit. Russell's Fortman and Okora can be the equal of any tandem in the Commonwealth.
