March 11, 201610 yr All thanks to baby boomers that coddled their children while leaving them completely unprepared for a world vastly different than the one they went out into 30 years ago partly due to their complete neglect of an economy set rolling by the generation of their own parents and which they have seemingly failed in their stewardship of. Zing! :lol2:
March 11, 201610 yr This was an interesting debate on free speech on campuses. It wasn't one of the best I've listened to, and it would have been a lot better if it was only between John McWhorter and Jason Stanley, but I enjoy civil discussions on controversial topics. Jason Stanley made a few thoughtful points, but on the whole I don't think the "Against" side seemed to grasp exactly what the issue/complaint was, which is why the audience overwhelming sided with the "For" argument. Free Speech Is Threatened on Campus – IQ2 Debates Those IQ2 debates are pretty good stuff usually, haven't run across one that did not interest me/inform me in some way yet. I will put this on the list of things to watch.
March 11, 201610 yr Can I offer a small defense here? I see these articles about these demands and I think a lot of them are ridiculous and counter-productive to free speech and learning. In other words, I share the reactions of most who have posted. But, my son is this age, a freshman, and I am pretty doggone impressed with him and his friends. They seem like a very level-headed bunch, concerned about things and such, studious, and hard working at school and jobs. So while these "demands" may be questionable, and supported by too many kids, it is possible that these demands don't have widespread campus support, but rather are just a vocal minority that is reported on. I hope so lol.

I hope so lol. That's mostly my view. I mean, we are talking about the "Student Assembly for Power and Liberation" at Western Washington University. I am troubled by what I see as a growing culture of "silencing" and coddling on college campuses, largely aided by administrators who see students' tuition money as more important than their education. But, some of it is overstated, especially when those elevated to national attention are usually black or female groups (look how ridiculous these people are). We just had a thread here a while ago with an article demanding the firing of a professor who had posted a conspiracy theory online blaming the rise of ISIS on Mossad. I didn't see any stirring paeans to the sanctity of free speech in there.
March 11, 201610 yr From the article: 4. They demand the creation and implementation of a 15 persxn panel (yes spelled persxn, it is considered more PC because does not derive from the word ‘son’) to monitor documents and archive all racist, anti-black, transphobic, cissexist, misogynist, ablest, homophobic, islamophobic, xenophobic, anti-semetic or otherwise oppressive behavior on campus. The committee will be accountable to the students “rather than the university.” "persxn." Enough said.
