No JV game vs Highlands tomorrow night?

Game is at 3:30 pm so the JV game is likely at 2pm.

Very fun game to watch.

CovCath jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead but Madison Central hit some big shots and had the lead until midway through the second quarter. At this point CovCath went to a very agressive zone defense, alternating between a 2-3 and either a 3-2 or 1-2-2. Madison Central couldn't get any looks and CovCath used several deflections to get some easy points in transition, flipping a 5 point deficit into a 9 point lead pretty quickly.

The second half the visitors led most of the way, but Madison Central kept clawing back, eventually tying the score early in the fourth. CovCath regained the lead, but failed to ice the game at the free throw line which allowed Madison Central several opportunities to tie the game in the last minute, but the Indians were unable to convert on these opportunities.

Miller from Madison Central was the star of the game in my opinion. He ferociously attacked the offensive glass in the second half and willed the Indians back into the game.

Madison Central looks a whole lot better than they did early in the year, and while they aren't as talented as the top teams in the 11th I think they can challenge anybody in the 11th region tournament.

I was really impressed with Ruthsatz for CovCath. He got a ton of deflections and steals and had a great feel for closing down passing lanes. I was a little disappointed watching VonHandorf. After seeing him play so well at state the last 2 years I was expecting he would be a top 10 player in the state. He wasn't bad by any means, but didn't really do anything to stand out as an elite player. CovCath is a solid team, not the best team in the state, but probably in the top 10.

No. 1 CovCath boys edge No. 18 Madison Central

No. 1 Covington Catholic 65, No. 18 Madison Central 63: AJ Mayer led four Colonels starters in double figures with 16 points as the state’s top-ranked team held on for a win in Richmond. Cole VonHandorf added 14 points for Catholic, which won its 12th straight game.

CJ Fredrick scored 13 and Andy Flood had 12 in the Colonel’s balanced attack, which Coach Scott Ruthsatz called a region-like environment.

“Sometimes you need these wake-up calls,” Ruthsatz said. “ ... With this young group you’ve really got to reemphasize the basics.”

Madison Central trailed by as many as 11 before climbing back into the game by employing an all-guard rotation. A series of three-pointers and and-one opportunities culminated in a trio of free-throw attempts by Grant Brockman with 15.3 seconds left that could have tied the game. He hit the first two but the third rolled out.
