Clyde Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Happened in Houston. Private entities are now being hired to collect and they are going to court to get the authority to arrest those who are late. This guy has owed $1500 since 1987 and US Marshalls came with guns drawn. US Marshals arresting people for not paying their federal student loans - Story | KRIV
UKMustangFan Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 This seems quite a bit ridiculous IMO. Are they arresting people with delinquent mortgages, car payments, or credit card debt?
TheDeuce Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Gotta pay your bills. Education should be free.
lawildcat Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Education should be free. Someone has to pay...
UKMustangFan Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Education should be free. Could not possibly disagree more.
jbird Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 No such thing as free. The universities should offset the costs. Also, high schools need to start telling kids that there are other options than a 4 year university. Vocational, etc. Also, kids need to take into consideration the degrees they are getting.
TheDeuce Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Could not possibly disagree more. You're certainly entitled to your opinion. The amount of money it costs to get a secondary education is disgusting at best.

While it is astronomically high, I agree, that doesn't mean it should be free IMO. A college degree is not necessary. It's not something that everyone is entitled to, nor something everyone needs to succeed at life. There definitely needs to be something done to lower the costs and make it more affordable though.

It will not change until kids stop going to 4-year universities and when they stop taking out student loans. Loans are making it too easy for schools to continue to raise their fees and for states to continue to cut back on tax contributions.
littleluck55 Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 What is the collection window for student debt? I believe Credit Cards are 7 years and the IRS can only collect up to 10 years. Why would student loans be 27 years?
Getslow Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Are we bringing back debtors prison? That's what I was thinking. Didn't we fight a revolution to get rid of this kind of stuff?
