Definitely a crazy season across the state.

This was an intense rivalry game and a great high school atmosphere. Somerset starts 4 sophomores and Southwestern starts 3. These guys know each other well and have been extremely competitive with each other in the past. Somerset came out to prove they could play with Southwestern and play with them they did! The biggest lead of the game was held by Southwestern at 7 (I think). The first quarter looked like the score would be a high scoring game as it ended 25-24 Southwestern. Fitzgerald picked up a technical after a big dunk for hanging on the rim. But the pace slowed some in the 2nd quarter and at the half it was 40-38 Southwestern. Payton Gover picked up his 2nd foul for SW with about 4:00 left in the half and SW was up by about 7 at that time. Fitzgerald is good, but Gover is the difference maker on that team. Somerset chipped away at the deficit and was only down by 2. On the first possession of the 3rd quarter, Gover picked up his 3rd foul which sat him for a few minutes. But Somerset took the lead and eventually went up by 4 and Gover came back in. Fitzgerald had a monster dunk about this time that drew appreciation from even the Somerset side. By the end of the 3rd it was 52-51 SHS. The 4th quarter was a back and forth lead change with most of the points coming from the foul line for both teams. Southwestern had the ball with 11 seconds on the clock down 1 but Somerset caused a turnover from pressure D. SW fouled and with 6 seconds on the clock SHS hit the first then missed the second FT. SW got the rebound and called TO at half court with 2.7 seconds left down 2. They got the ball to Gover on the drawn up play but he missed the long 3. Somerset wins 64-62.

Butt 1? That sums it up nicely.

And he was in most of the game. Somerset did a nice job of shutting him down.

Big win for Somerset.

Danny Butt shut himself down.... Govers foul trouble hurt SW bad and Hunter Stevens was 0-4 from 3 and wide open looks. Kid usually doesn't miss. Somerset deserved the win and SW would t come out of the 2-3 zone and Somerset picked it a part. Still no clue why SW never played man and why Gover sat so long with his IQ and SW playing zone.

Somersets younger core is coming along nicely of late and that gyms always hard to play in....SW had Mercer on their mind as well. One game at a time though. Great win by Somerset.

 

When SW is scoring in the 60's it's usually a awful game for them. Played sloppy down the stretch. Also SW had some huge turnovers they usually don't commit.

I know I'm biased but I think Somerset has one of the best small gyms in the state.

I remember the 48th district being played there in the late 90's when I was playing and that gym was always crazy. Loved playing there. Their students always participate well also.

I love that gym! People can say whatever they want about it being too small and confined, but that's what makes it what it is. You step in that gym and it's like you've taken a step back in time. And when the band is on tap, yessir it's a dandy!

I think at the time it was built (way back in the day) it was one of the biggest in the state. Remodel a few years ago that took out the ceiling tile and exposed the rafters was awesome.

Yea I think they probably found several of our old beer cans when they removed the ceiling tile. We would play at nite in there and we didnt have anywhere to put the cans. lol We couldnt just throw them in the garbage can so that is where they went.
