Brossart wins the Class A Indoor Championship. 3-peat for the Stangs!

Not much of an indoor state championship when only a handful of teams show up in each class to compete. Mason's facilities have improved and they are better than nothing, but a 133 meter oval is a tough place to run.

 

Not every school chooses to participate in indoor track. The same can be said for other sports like bowling, swimming and diving, bass fishing, archery just to name a few, but it doesn't lessen the accomplishments of the athletes and schools who did participate. Tates Creek hasn't traditionally competed during the indoor track season but this year they decided to commit fully to indoor and the athletes were really motivated to working for ending the season at the state meet.

 

As far as the facility is concerned, its not ideal, but it was a level playing field. Everyone there pretty much knew what they were getting in to, but just having the facility available on a week to week basis for meets is a tremendous benefit to the teams and athletes who choose to use it. We made the trip to Mason Co. twice this year and found them to be gracious hosts and the meets were well run.

 

The only problem I see going forward would be how crowded it can get in there. Comparing last year to this year, the state meet seems to be growing, and if it grows much more they may need to make some adjustments to scheduling or going to qualifying times of some sort.

 

We had a great (and successful) trip to the state meet this year and hopefully we'll be back for next years state meet.

Yeah, but BBHS won the Class A Indoor this weekend, so they are doing even better ! Thanks for the post jack though….

Big shout out to Adam Hartig of Brossart--3000 meter champion; Joey Hickman--400 meter dash champion and TJ Moore--long jump champion and 3rd place in the 55m dash as well as the high jump. Cody Chism had a great day as well. The Stangs brought it. Total team effort!

Congrats to Highlands girls throwers, they went 1-2, Mikayla Reichert is a repeat KTCCCA indoor 2AA State Champ and MC Redden, Soph took second. Highlands took 2, left 1-2. Throws were not great, but got the job done.

I will defend the Mason County indoor facility to the death.

 

Ideal? No. But when they did away with the Mason-Dixon games at Broadbent Arena, this was a more than adequate replacement for the state indoor meet.

 

I've probably told this back story a couple of times, but it bears repeating as a great example of creative financing.

 

Mason County schools bought the old Jockey factory several years ago. I can't remember who approached who, but (and I apologize if I get some of this wrong), MC would up borrowing money - I think from the KTCCCA - to create the only high school indoor track facility in the Commonwealth. No interest loan. In less than 4 years, through a combination of revenues from participating teams and individuals, spectator admissions and concessions, the loan was repaid. All subsequent revenues are gravy. MC Coach Kachler can correct me if I'm incorrect on some of this; it's to the best of my hazy recollection, as I haven't been associated with the program for 8 years.

 

Is it perfect? No. Can it get terribly crowded? Yes. Is a 133-meter oval ideal? No. (you should have been there before they resurfaced it).

 

But it's a great way to keep the HS indoor season relevant in Kentucky.

Always look forward to outdoor track season. Here's one word of advice.

 

Never volunteer to be a meet coordinator. I did that ONCE for a middle school meet at Mason County (on that goofy little 300m track). I knew I was in trouble when one of my timers (everything hand-timed) had someone in the 100m at 8.7. And that was the third place finisher.

This facility is nothing but awesome...and anyone who says different should show me what they are comparing it to....at the high school level. There are way too many empty big buildings in the Maysville area to not have capitalized on this deal and the fact that a school system and a commercial entity could get this done, and it's paid for and provides an incredible service should not be overlooked.

 

They have a pretty good concession stand too...and if you know me, I'm always scouting a good concession stand. It's not "Fieldhouse Popcorn" but then again...
