Stats and Questions

Featured Replies

I have been scouring the internet for information on teams and players through out KY this season and have yet to find any news outlet, BGpreper or even stat accumulating webpage that sites defense and team play more important than scoring.

Why are defensive stats and more importantly assists not posted as regularly as the scoring stats in KY?

Are there sources that I can use to find these stats out? Thanks!

People only seem to focus on scoring, which is sad. Some girls do so much more for their teams, but receive no recognition because they aren't the leading scorer.

What stats give you the best idea of how a team does defensively?

You have hit a nerve with me! The reason the game is so ugly these days is because it is all about scoring. And the only way to score is to jack up a lot of shots. And coaches don't seem to care if the shots are good or bad.

I would rather have a girl on my team that averages 10 points, 5 reb, a few assists and a couple blocks a game, rather than someone who simply just puts up 15ppg.

Defensive stops and steals are two pretty big ones. If you're in a big tourney those are recorded. Otherwise, they're never recognized and no one keeps track. If they did, some folks would be talking about a whole different group of girls..

I would say defensive rebounds.

Oh and of course blocks..

The problem is the tracking , as you mentioned.

I remember "back in the day" Bill Warfield had a stat crew and each had a job. Efficiency was a big stat he kept - points per possession on both offense and defense.

I think personally that Rebounds, Blocks, Steals, Deflections, turn overs caused. All the things that are difficult to track! Ha!

Deflections gives you an idea of effort and aggressiveness but, as you said, hard to track.

The problem with any aggregate stats like defensive boards or blocked shots is that it doesn't give you a true picture. Let's say you had 4 blocked shots. Against how many? Did the team take 60 shots or 40 shots? Same with defensive rebounds.

That's why I like stats that are broken down in a "per possession" method.

I absolutely agree. The odd thing to me is that Basketball is heavily weighted as one of Kentucky's (as a state, not just UK) greatest assets. Which leads me to believe there would be more invested in the entirety of the sport. I dunno, maybe I'm just hopeful.

The biggest investment the state of kentucky needs to make is introducing a shot clock.

I agree with most of what is being said in this thread. I agree that all the other stats are what lead to points being scored. However, at the end of the game the winning team may have been out rebounded or have fewer steals or assists but they always have more points on the board. That is why scorers garner more attention in most cases. Coaches should do a good job of communicating the importance of every players role. I love the kids that go out and get 10-12 rebounds a game but may only score 6-8 points. Those kids are needed on a basketball team but they will rarely get the spotlight that the scorers do. As long as the coaches and the kids in the locker room understand the value of a rebounder or defensive specialist that is all that matters.

One of my major complaints over the years. Years ago during their glory days Lexington Catholic had a player named Sarah Schell sp? that would routinely have stat lines of 11 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, six steals, three blocks and hold her defensive assignment to 5-6 points but the only stat that would show up in the news would be the points. Also, I am interested in impact points, not "padding" the stats when the game is basically over. I remember one player told her coach " I scored 23 points tonight" and he responded "You gave up 28 on defense." It can be frustrating for the girls since so many awards are given on inflated offensive numbers and some of the stats that lead to the team wins are ignored.
