Ashland did not look good Saturday. We have the makings of a very interesting opening game.

:thumb: Thanks greybeard, Raceland folks have always has a deep respect for your Tomcats. Raceland looke pretty good in their scrimmage but some weakness were exposed. That is what scrimmages are for. Good luck to the Tomcats except for your home opener.

If you can get some grass to grow so they do not have to play in the usual mudhole we may consider your offer. One reason Raceland agrees to play at Putnam is that Raceland has so much respect for the Ashland program and what it stands for and Ashland has returned the same respect. The attendance factor also helps!!

It was in pretty bad shape during the Spring track season, but it was also being used for soccer. If they had field turf it would be a great place to play a game. Nothing can compare to the atmosphere when playing at Putnam Stadium.

I think our raceland coaching staff needs to quit talking players (freshman,sophmores) into playing. we have had the same players every year since jfl start late in the season. They will end up starting over kids that have trained in the weight room and paid for the camps etc. We dont need them. Their parents are negative all year long about the football program and then relish in the fact their child is being recruited during the year. If they dont come out in the season why should they have their entire summer off and then think they can play anytime they want. Lets stand up for the boys with heart and want to play. I would have 100 average kids with heart then take one of those boys.

oldram, if you are talking about players that come out late such as after summer camp or 2or 3 games into the season you have a valid point. However, remember there are situations where a kid has a reasonable excuse for coming out late. There are things that happen that a kid of high school age has no control over. I really do not know the exact situation you are referring to but I have seen it happen in the past.

As for the coaches talking a player into playing I see no problem with that as long as it is handled in a legal manner.Normally when this situation comes up, the coaches and the players vote whether to accept a new player or refuse him a chance to be on a team. If playing on a high school team keeps just one kid from going the wrong direction in life, then the coach has done a great justice for everyone involved. Remeber that a high school coach is also a teacher and athletics teach kids in a number of ways.We have had several instances where a player comes out his Jr. or Sr. year and has been one of the best leaders the team has had. Remember these are young men that have only been on God's great earth for just a few short years so let's give them all our total support and lead by example.

oldram....By the way your post is worded I can't really tell what you are talking about. I think that your point/complaint is that when a kid comes out late and then plays over some that have been through camp,spring ball,etc..I too wish and believe that ALL kids should be out from spring sign ups on, that is however almost never the case. I can also see if a kid comes out late (just before season) that maybe he should not play for a cetain amount of time/games or whatever the coaches decide in that situation. However oldram as far as someone complaining and being negative all year long, imo you are not going to stop that from happening no matter where you are. A coach trying to talk a kid in the school to coming out I don't see a problem with. I don't really follow you on that point either. You said something about parents being "negative". Aren't your comments in this post a bit negative? Imo a coach has to put the best athletes that he has on the field in a position for them and the team to sucseed. I do not think that we need this dissention amoungst ourselves. May I suggest that if you have legit complaint or problem with something within the system to go to the coach and ask him about it. That would be a one on one conversation between you and the coach instead of putting it out on an open forum. I believe that a coach would respect you coming to him in that manner, I know if I were a coach that I would. I am not critisizing you for having complaints, just that there may be a better way to get some answers.

Let's hope we can get back to that "Orange Crush" defense that we used to have.

I agree cville, :thumb: the Rams season this year I believe will hinge on the defense. They HAVE to do a better job on the Defensive side of the ball in order to go anywhere. Defense always has and always will win.

i agree totally i should not want a child that can avoid getting in trouble not to play. i also being a past coach years ago for another school i do see that you can take that child and enrich their life. I am speaking more of taking kids that do not want to put the work in for the spring or summer and are out playing, swimming, motorcycle riding and such with good backgrounds and family support on a team after bragging that they could play at anytime. We do not need to put players on our team for the sake of numbers. we need to keep the players we have and let them bond. There are always instances where putting one on is a good thing but a few of these kids get on the team right after the first or second scrimmage and then start. We have an excellent coaching staff but i am not sure that they know that some of these kids have been doing this for years. We shouldnt play politics. The ones that work play. There is no need to go to the coaching staff with such a trivial opinion but it is just that an opinion.

:thumb: I read this post a little more clear than the first and I agree with what you have said. I can't speak for this paticular instance, but from my past experience, when this situation occured the players voted as to whether to accept or deny the player joining the team. I am not in favor of players coming out late while the others have given their soul to the program on a year round basis. The coach should be aware if this is happening, he has been there for quite a few years and it is his responsibility to keep the ship afloat. As for going to the coach, I am sure he would much rather you come to him and voice your concern than to bring it out in an open forum for everyone to hear. If you approach him with respect I am sure he will listen to what you have to say. He may not do anything, but he will listen and may be able to give you an answere as to why something is done this way.

I understand your point on kids coming in late when others are busting their butt all spring, hot summer and weight and conditioning.:thumb: That is why I put in my previous post that maybe some type of restriction such as extra running, extra drills or possobly sitting out a game or two might be a solution. I don't know, I am not the coach, they set their guidlines and such.I respect their decisions as I respect your opinion oldram and I have mine as well, no problem.:thumb: .

IMO anybody that is second guessing what Coach V is doing these days doesn't know a lot about 1A football. He has put together an outstanding staff and the numbers are beyond impressive for a school of Raceland's size! The youth league seems to be very solid in the games I have seen them too. It seems as if they have a vison for their program and are executing the plan.

I understand being upset if your kid is getting knocked out of a spot but life isn't always fair. If you are getting it done on the field and in the classroom then there is no reason to worry. 1 or 2 big time athletes can be all the difference in the world in 1A. :thumb: :thumb: Stick that is one GREAT post and comments, I agree with you on ALL points that you brought up. You just said things in the way that I was trying to only yours came out much better and to the point. I have never coached on a high school level but I have coached different sports on youth levels. This kind of things happens all the time. If ever that all were pleased 100% of the time I have never experienced it or heard of it. Like I was expressing, a h.s. coach imo should put his best athletes in a position that they and the TEAM can excel. All players on this year's team has been with the team during spring and most of the summer unless invovled in other sports. However, sometimes kids are allowed out to help get the numbers up so that a small school can compete. Bottom line about playing time, if you can play you play, as long as you are doing what is ask of you. Some kids work very hard and still are not able to get the playing time they want because someone is better at their position. High school is not JFL where everybody plays, but what I have seen from most coaches is those players that work hard are rewarded with playing time on special teams or whenever a game allows a coach to get those kids in. Coaching little league is different from high school, coaches job's are on the line.
