The Quest Begins for Red Devils

Mercer could be a very tough team. Harrodsburg always produces some great athletes with exceptional speed so it will indeed make it a tougher Dist. but I think Russell will come away the Champion.

Mercer is in a different district and with the new playoff format this season, I don't think Russell could face them until the carpet...and we both know it's that's LOOOOOOOOOOONG way off and much can happen between now and then.

I believe it's two...unfortunately for the Lions, that seems to be their early peak each season. After last year's win over Russell, the team doused Damron with water and one would have thought they'd just won state...too bad they still had six more weeks of regular season football to play (which resulted in a 1-5 record with the lone win coming in the final game against Greenup).

I didn't know how that factored into 2A vs 3A. I don't know if that matters at all. Just wondering.

Yes. Russell's district is weak. No one ever claimed otherwise. Does Belfry playing in a weak district diminish their back to back titles? No.

Yes. Ashland for the time being must take a back seat. Because Russell has won the last 2 meetings and 4 of 6 since 2000

I don't think that Russell's titles wether it be district , region state or other wise has been put diminished by anyone in this discussion, I know that in every post that I have made I have complimented Russell on their sucsess through the years. I have commented on Russell's district and region being extremly weak and it is. Russell does not face any real competetion imo untill the state Semi's, I believe that is the round where they play most likely Belfry. (if not then it is whatever round that they meet them that they face legit teams). By the way, look at the traditon and history of the Tomcats through the years and you will see that they take a back seat to no one. I think that you may be trying to look for an argument when there is none here. All have seemed to agree that Russell has a program that they can be proud of, they play in a weak district, they deserve reconition for their sucsess. They have a great coach with class in McGlone (too bad not all his fans carry the "class" gene:sssh: ). I don't think that you can fnd one of my post that diminishes Russell Football in any way. I just think that you and DP78 cannot reconize that other school's in the area in different classifications(like Ashland and Raceland) have good programs and just as much pride in their teams as Russell does. Russell is very good and their fans should be proud but russell is "not the only game in town" to everyone:D . Again, good luck in your upcoming season.

It takes more than talent to win a state championship...Will Russell repeat?? They are very capable and I hope they do, but odds are they won't...Most teams will NEVER win a state championship & certainly our 27 year span in between titles tells us there are no guarantees, especially when it comes to winning 2 in a row...

Winning the championship takes the right matchups, breaks, big plays at the right time, lack of injuries to key players, etc...Most Russell fans realize that last year's team was probably the 3rd best team Russell has fielded in recent years (behind '02 & '04)...But, that's why you play the game!!! Timing is everything & last year was Russell's time...Everything (as mentioned above) fell into place at the right time...

We have a program that we can be proud of...Whether, or not, we ever win another state championship won't change this...Let's try to remember that...Last year is over & we haven't won a thing yet this year...I agree that some fans go overboard with the bragging...It can get embarrassing at times but fan is short for fanatic & that means that not everything they say is based totally on fact...People do have a tendancy to look at things through "school colored" glasses sometimes...You just have to realize who the sources are...EVERY team has that type of fan...You just have to realize that they do not speak for everyone who supports that team and whether we agree or not, they are entitled to their opinion...

I'm looking forward to watching Russell defend their championship and hope to be on the sidelines again at Papa John's Stadium in early December if everything falls into place as it did last year...The only thing I'm predicting is Russell will show up ready to play every Friday and whether it happens this year or in another 27 years, I plan on being there to support them...

If you can find one classeless remark that I have made please show it to me. Likewise I don't believe you can find any derogatory comment that I have made about Raceland or Ashland

I do recognize the traditions at schools such as Ashland and Raceland, but Russell has had Ashland's number of late, and unfortunately we will never know how a possible Raceland/Russell matchup from past years may have turned out. It is pure speculation on all sides.

Also, this is a Russell football thread. So it does seem right that they are the main subject. Not the only game in town but the topic of this thread.

I've heard that Greenup has had low numbers out so far in the preseason....It seems the Greenup might not be able the hang with the Red Devils....But of course it only takes 11 to play.

By the way I'm glad you guys brought the hardware home to EKY last year....Yes, I'm serious about that good luck this year except in week 2 ;-)

:thumb: :thumb: Great post and thank you. I obviously promote Raceland in all programs and can go overboard on them at times though I try and keep it realistic. Your post shows that there are some "red devil" fans with class. Again, good luck to you.

I thought that this was an open forum for all to contribute on any threads they wanted to within the bgp rules. If you notice there a lot, most threads on here started about one team and fans of other teams join in. I personally don't see anything wrong with that but as of now I will leave and you can have this particular thread. I apologize if I offended anyone it was not mean that way.

Well said, Devil58 - a very classy post!

Graybeard

58 said it all , with one exception. 2005 was the best team - no stars, just kids who always found a way - that's a team. Maybe not the most individual talent nor glamor individuals. In 2005 , the "whole" was much better than it's individual parts. All parts stepped up at different times and won games - credit to the coaches. But no one will dispute the timing also was " just right " for the Team of 2005.

Go Devils , I too plan to show up this season, every friday night ,just won't be on the field ....

I've heard that Greenup has had low numbers out so far in the preseason....It seems the Greenup might not be able the hang with the Red Devils....But of course it only takes 11 to play.

I talked with a parent of a GC player today and he informed me that they had about 40 out for their 1st practice.I do know they lost a few players to transfers.

Did this include the freshmen or was this varsity only? I understood they only had about 25-30 out for varsity so far.

I would say it included Freshman that are playing varsity. The parent I talked with has a son that is a Freshman and he is playing varsity. I saw them on the practice field yesterday and the numbers looked less than what he had stated. I am not a GC fan but I hope the numbers are higher than what was stated previously.
