Sean Payton to the Giants. Just have this gut feeling.

Was he an assistant with the Giants in 91 or 87?

88-91

Just think, the Bengals picked Marvin over him...........

Who knows though. Yeah Tom Coughlin has 2 rings, but he also only has 2 playoff appearances. Caught absolute fire twice and as a Bengals fan I would trade places in a heartbeat, but I don't believe he would have done any better of a job than Marvin.

Tom Coughlin has more than two playoff appearances. The Giants went 12-4 the year after their first super bowl over the Pats, and lost in the second round.

He has 5 playoff appearances with 2 super bowls in 12 years with the Giants.

Should mention that one season the Giants didn't make the playoffs at 10-6, and another at 9-7.

Anyone see the video of the press conference? The owner of the Giants got up to thank Coughlin/shake his hand, and Coughlin just walked straight off.

You would think he was being rude (un-Coughlin like), but ESPN commentators said that was Coughlin's routine and that's what he was sticking to, meaning no bad blood visible.

He is getting up there in age, but if he still wanted to coach somewhere I think he could for a few more years. And be a tremendous addition.

I have felt the Giants needed a new voice leading the ship for the past couple of years. Regardless of the Superbowl accomplishments, you can't build up enough cache to only make 1 playoff appearance in 7 seasons, the last 3 of which being losing seasons.

I don't put much into that. Coughlin got out quick. It was emotional and I think he just wanted out. He had just finished talking directly to Eli who was about to break down in tears. Coughlin didn't shake anyone's hand on the way out and Mara was getting up to talk next.

Mara has said he and Coughlin have talked about Tom staying on in some capacity and Tom agreed to think about it. A giants reporter says Tom's wife was optimistic that was a possibility too.

Watch him end up in Cleveland and win a super bowl and exit stage right.

The one playoff season in last several years hurts but I'm not sure its all Coughlins fault. Either way as a Giants fan I'm sad to see him go. Seems like a great once in a lifetime your coach who coaches the right way.

Every coach hired under Wellington Mara had some prior connection to the Giants organization, with one exception being Dan Reeves.

If that holds true under John Mara that would mean your top candidates for the Giants are probably...

Ben McAdoo

Steve Spagnuolo

Sean Payton

There are a few others with some different connections like Josh McDaniel, Nick Saban and maybe even Bill Cowher.

The Giants will interview McAdoo and Spags. They've also requested an interview with Adam Gase.
