Vaught's Views: Why so many classes only for football?

Featured Replies

I think very few teams, their fans bravado aside, will choose to play up.

I agree but that is not the point I am making in this thread.:thumb:

Oops. That quote and post are in the wrong thread! Should be in the Beechwood playing 2A thread.

I have to disagree my friend. The KHSAA is pursuing this idea because the coaches overwhelmingly voted for a public/private split. Never, and I mean never, was there a vote by the coaches for 6 classes. This is just Plan B to try to "calm the masses." It will probably work for a while, and may work wholly if they implement the "super class" alignment. But the underlying issues still remain and still need to be addressed.

Yeah, the only coaches I could see wanting 6 classes are the schools that have to compete against the big 4A schools, can't see the rest of the state wanting us to go to 6 classes, why would they?

The 6 class idea has been talked about long enough, that if a coach at a certian school claims ignorance, its thier own fault. Just because there wasn't a large amount of attention on these types of changes until the attempted split, doesn't mean that the coaches association hasn't been worknig at the six class idea for the last couple of years. Remember, the split vote was done by member schools of the KHSAA, not the football coaches. Some people I believe are getting the source of six classes confused.

then you obviously haven't looked at 1A from the majority of teams in that class'es point of view. Going to 6 classes has benefits to all the classes, not just one.

Well, with this new system, either Mayfield or Beechwood would probably dominate 1A, so now 1A and 6A will be the same, so I am seeing a few schools become elite schools in their respective classes. And like others have been saying, who is going to want to play up? Lots of schools will say they invite the challenge, but when it comes down to it, a lot of these schools just want a title so they will likely stay in 5A.

6 classes for 221 schools seems a bit ludicrous, when more schools play basketball ......why not have 8 basketball champions as well

O22,

While I agree this is also Plan B to calm the anti private school sentiment the fact remains the KY Football Coaches Association formally recommended the move to six classes to the Board of Control.

Understood, I did not know that. Timing seems a bit odd, no? I guess the sentiment I was trying to express is that this is just a means to appease the masses, and never would have happened if there wasn't talk of a public/private split.

There are quite a few posters that are disagreeing with that. Maybe someone could start a poll on which class benefits the most from 6 classes. Just for fun:D

I'll bite, why not? But oh wait! This is a football forum, not a basketball one!:D
