The stats come from a new report released by a non-profit group called the Prison Policy Initiative. According to the report, KY has the third highest rate of female incarceration in the world, imprisoning women at nearly twice the rate of Thailand- the highest rated country in the world and nearly twice the national average.

 

The report shows how each state's incarceration rates compare with countries of the world. West Virginia has the highest rate in the world- 273 women per 100,000 people- followed by Oklahoma with 226 and KY with 220.

 

According to the report , nearly 30 percent of the world's incarcerated women are imprisoned in the United States, even though only 5 percent of the world's women live here. Twenty-four states and the District of Columbia have higher incarceration rates than Thailand(130). Even those states that have comparatively low rates of incarceration far out-incarcerate the majority of the world.

 

Illinois' incarceration rate for women is on par with El Salvador, where abortion is illegal and women are routinely jailed for having miscarriages. New Hampshire is on par with Russia and New York with Rwanda.

 

Rhode Island, which has the lowest female incarceration rate in the U.S. , would have the 15th highest incarceration rate in the world if it were a country, according to the PPI report.

 

I found these statistics very interesting. What are your thoughts about the Bluegrass State locking up its women at a higher rate than anywhere else in the world?

Unfortunately, dope has replaced hope in many areas of the commonwealth. Bring back decent jobs and the incarceration rate will go down.

Sure did SF, hope you did as well. I tried to keep it at a minimum and pace myself(diabetes). One thing though, I've always thought Frisch's had THE BEST pumpkin pie for years. This year's pie, not so great, tasted like it was missing half the spices. Wonder if the new owners are cutting back on things already. Well, back to the incarceration discussion.

I read an article from a Madison Co paper and wrote down what I remembered. I'll see if I can find out where to find this report. I'd like to see it as well. I know it was conducted by the PPI but I don't remember, right off, what the title of the report was or exactly when it was released . I will see if I can find out.

I don't know, Jim, but I'd say a lot of them are due to meth or meth-related offenses. I know we have a huge problem with that. Seems like in our local papers, there is a meth roundup every week or two and seems like a pretty good number of those are women. Just a guess , though. Maybe in Texas they just send the women straight to the execution chamber. :idunno:
