November 24, 201510 yr Looks like 1990 was the last time they included questions about outhouses/privies on the US Census.
November 25, 201510 yr I was in my senior year of high school when my grandparents got an "indoor privy".
November 25, 201510 yr Great Grandpa NEVER had indoor toilet...his kids offered for years to put one in and he had no desire to have one. Outhouse was about 100 yards away from the house and he had lights strung in the trees in case you needed to go after dark. When he passed away in 1990 the only toilets he had ever used were in the hospital or when visiting one of his children. He also had a well room in the back of the house that he would drop a "Well Bucket" (long piece of pipe) down the well to draw out water.
