No obligation if the LOI has not been signed.

If the student athlete has signed anything at this point it should be a request for aid, which in turns reserves the funding for the athlete to still sign his LOI in February. I'm not sure if the Request for Academic Aid is as binding as the actual LOI?

I'm not sure a NLI can ALREADY be signed when you CAN'T sign until February.

 

Even JUCO players CAN'T sign until at least December.

According to the story I linked, most DO honor their offers.

 

Getting out of them is hard.

 

However, the bigger unanswered question remains: Is a pre-signed (way before the actual signing date) still "legal" or bonding in the eyes of the school?

 

This is the first I've heard of football NLIs being signed in November (or earlier).

 

I know with many of the athletes I've dealt with, the school didn't even send (via mail, fax, email, whatever) the NLI until the week of the actual signing.

 

I can't find a quick answer via google, but does signing the NLI already make it, for lack of a better phrase, "null and void" by the signee?

For early enrollees the athlete must sign a request for financial aid document. Then in February they sign the letter of intent. This is a way to get the players verbal commitment into a binding document. Not sure if I've ever heard of an early enrollee changing their commitment after the request for aid was signed. If they sign that they are usually pretty committed because classes and orientation begins shortly after Christmas break.
