November 23, 201510 yr Their roster is full of transfers from Tenn, Auburn, Bama, Ole Miss. They look like a FBS team (and will be soon). They always do have said transfers. It hasn't translated into much (so far). I think the OVC gets hit because it is a big step up in competition.

If they can get past the 2nd round they might even make a run to the finals. Their offensive and defensive lines look and move like SEC lines. That game against Auburn was no fluke. They might not play the Tigers to overtime or beat them more than 1-2 times out of 10 if they played but they'd be competitive in every game. I was on the sidelines for EKU's games against UK and JSU and JSU had by far the better line of scrimmage on each side of the ball.

Jacksonville State was up 48-20 in that game (and one of the UT-Martin TDs was on a fumble return) in the 4th quarter before taking their foot off of the gas and letting Martin stage a comeback.

Results in little old non-scholarship Dayton getting to host a game after making the playoffs for the first time since moving to Division I football over 20 years ago. I had no idea Dayton didn't offer football scholarships. How on earth do they get talent to come there to play? That extremely impressive on their part to make it this far.

Well, now that the Pioneer Leauge, which is an entirely non-scholarship league, has an automatic bid to the playoff, it's less impressive than it would have been four years ago, when teams from the league almost never made the field. As for how they get recruits: it's very dependent on the reputation of the school in the region. Lots of kids that want to keep playing and come to UD on some other form of academic scholarship or aid. I'm not hugely connected with the football program and how it works but I know there are a few Morehead fans around the forums that could probably answer in more detail about how non-scholarship programs recruit.
November 24, 201510 yr First playoff appearance for Dayton since 1992, right @Getslow? Hosting Western Illinois seems like a winnable first round game for the Flyers. Yeah. That was the last year in D-III. I'm not sure what to think about with Western Illinois. They're 6-5 but all their losses came to other teams in the FCS playoffs and the FBS University of Illinois. I hate that it's scheduled for the same time as the UofL/UK game. Wrestling over whether or not to go to Dayton and just skip the Cardinals. Don't let Western Illinois record fool you. Dayton, who has had a great season, will be hard pressed to stay within 4 touchdowns of the Leathernecks. There's a huge talent difference in regular FCS teams and FCS non-scholarship leagues like the Pioneer League. WIU has wins against 2 other playoff teams. They destroyed Eastern Illinois 33-5 and nipped South Dakota State in 2 OT. They also have a 7 point loss to Coastal Carolina. This is a really good football team. Nice run by the Flyers but I'll take WIU 45-14 in this one.

Nice run by the Flyers but I'll take WIU 45-14 in this one. The whole of the MVFC is a great league. I have no doubts about what UD has to overcome to even be competitive in this. The Flyers have one win over a team in the playoff field, but that's against Duquesne, which operates under Northeast Conference rules of incomplete scholarship capacity: 34 football scholarships as compared to the full 60 the top leagues have. Dayton also has a win over 60-scholarship Kennesaw State but that team in their own league play in the Big South, while hanging close with Charleston Southern, was absolute blown out by Costal Carolina.

December 2, 201510 yr So much for my Coastal Carolina sleeper pick :lol2: 2nd team from the OVC, Eastern Illinois, gets annihilated by Northern Iowa. Jacksonville State gets a rematch with Chattanooga. Jacksonville State beat Chattanooga by 3 the first week of the season. NDSU plays Montana in the Fargodome. Montana defeated the Bison in late August on a last second TD in Bozeman. Game was played under a haze because of the forest fires nearby. The game was nearly cancelled. Would not shock me to see the Bison lose without their starting QB.
December 2, 201510 yr Author Scores from last weekend.... Western Illinois 24 Getslow 7 So frustrating. Three red zone turnovers in the first half. Ick. Had the Flyers managed to build a lead in the first half they might have found a way to hang on. Too much sloppy play against a team with full scholarships. It was still a fun ride, winning the league and making the playoffs. Can't say enough about what those players and that coaching staff managed to do this year.
