Grantland is Done

For now at least. Suspended effective immediately, happened to be my favorite part of ESPN. Sad.

Yet First Take lives on....

I had really cut back on my reading in recent months. I was really down to Zach Lowe and Brian Phillips. I'll miss it but there are some supremely talented folks there that will find an outlet for that creativity.

All @grantland33 writers will have their contracts honored; intent is to use sports writers on other @espn platforms.

I hate this as I really enjoyed the Grantland page. The rock critic was always fun to read, and many others as well. I found myself reading a story the other day about a lumberjack competition of all things, and it was excellent.

I'm now hoping Simmons is able to steal Zac Lowe. Lowe , Greenwald , and Barnwell were my three favorite left. I also like Keri.

It was a terrible way to end it.

Simmons now has 7 million downloads of his new podcast in October. Averaging 400k listens a pod and growing.

Grantland crumbles in his absence.

His next huge win will be when his documentaries on HBO surpass 30 for 30.

I wonder if there'll be a race on between ESPN and HBO to get Simmons' other 30for30 ideas filmed. You know he probably had a huge list of ones he wanted to do.

Simmons probably kept most secret. He didn't trust them for a few years. Plus it seems the directors all were loyal to his vision.

But I agree it will be interesting.

I was never a big Grantland reader, but I would always love their sort of niche pieces. There was an article on the board game Diplomacy, and it's still one of the best things I've read on the internet in years. They've always taken a really good look at what makes sports people and people in general tick, and I love that.

Now I wish I had of read more of the stuff on there.

I read that as well. Very interesting piece. I had never heard of the game before.

I'm really going to miss the Grantland NFL Podcast if Barnwell and Mays don't continue it on their own

ESPN is basically becoming TMZ. That's what the consumer wants, shorter stories and more videos. Grantland was so good because everything was build on long and researched pieces rather than two paragraphs of fluff writing.

I hate videos. If I click a link for a story and I'm taken to a video, I'm moving on.
