Central Hardin vs Western Kentucky

Featured Replies

i agree with you too. They are not top 5. If Henderson makes it to them they will beat Henderson but it won't be like any of the other top ranked teams beat them. And that will be the cols 7th best team they have played all year.

4312-Henderson County

WINS:

#4396 Daviess County (Owensboro, KY) (28-14),

#7190 Reitz Memorial (Evansville, IN) (48-28),

#9112 Ohio County (Hartford, KY) (35-0),

#9181 Muhlenberg County (Greenville, KY) (35-12),

LOSSES:

#741 Gibson Southern (Fort Branch, IN) (56-7),

#1285 McCracken County (Paducah, KY) (40-17),

#1415 Caldwell County (Princeton, KY) (51-20),

#1459 Reitz [F. J.] (Evansville, IN) (62-14),

#2009 Christian County (Hopkinsville, KY) (28-14)

FWIW, Central Hardin is 1677 according to MaxPreps/CalPreps.

I'll give you Gibson Southern, McCracken, Caldwell and FJ Reitz are better than Central Hardin. And Owensboro.

That's five.

But who is the sixth team on your schedule better than Central Hardin?

Christian? Maybe, but NOT if they lose to John Hardin (who Central Hardin beat).

Certainly not Daviess (who has collapsed).

Can't reasonable see any one else on the schedule.

I'm also pretty sure CH is ahead of Christian in the Cantrall and Litkenhous computer rankings, too.

I don't follow basketball, but I will repeat my earlier question: When has a team that isn't the best in 6A won the state title? There are plenty of occasions where the second-best team wasn't in the finals, but when has the best team that year not won the title?

You could argue Male was the favorite in 14 and 13 and choked.

After that, though, it's pretty clear that the 6-A champ has been elite all season and not just a team that got on fire or caught lightning in a bottle.

I don't the last time the 6-A champ flew under the radar or came out of nowhere. I'm drawing a blank.

latest AP poll Owensboro 2, Caldwell 3, Gibson southern 1, Reitz 2 who was number 1 until last game of season got beat by 1 pt to number 1 in 2-a. And Chatard was number 6.

Others have pointed this out: If AP is your No. 1 determining factor of how good a team is, you're in for a rude awakening.

Central Hardin was No. 2 in 6-A last year. Not only were they NOT a serious contender (who was twice winless in regulation against Meade, who Trinity running clocked in the state semis) but the final computer rankings had Central Hardin 10TH -- just in 6-A, not overall -- once the complete season was over.

I'll take BGPreps, CalPreps/MaxPreps computer (same exact rankings), Litkenhous computer and Cantrall computer before I would use AP to pick who wins.

AP is the worst of the lot (inconsistent voting panel, inconsistent number of voters, no Northern Kentucky representation), and it's NOT even close.

Judged is a personal opinion. How you are listed in history book is not.

Don't think I ever said what the highlight was, you did. I don't think there was a highlight game. Highlight moment, back to back district titles! Say the district is down, I know you will. But they still had to win. Nice chatting with you! Good luck to the school you root for, wichever that maybe. Go Bruins!

Of the 48 districts in the state:

1 6A District 3

2 6A District 5

3 6A District 7

6 6A District 8

8 6A District 6

9 6A District 2

13 6A District 4

15 6A District 1

It's a good district when comparing all districts (E'town's district is weaker than all 8 6-A districts and is 21st overall).

wow, so four teams that have been in top 3 in their class in the AP poll don't have a chance to win a state title. So why play the games lets just go to the computer poll and see who is number one. You forgot Owensboro who my bad they don't get a shot because number 1 bg is in same bracket doesn't matter that they are number 2 in the state and just got beat by 3 nope no shot for the red devils. I said could be state champions and I can put up numbers for all four.

2014 high school football state champions and playoff brackets - MaxPreps

2014 Indiana High School State Champs

Indiana

1A - North Vermillion (Cayuga) def. Pioneer, 27-26 (North Vermillion was 2 in final Indiana AP poll, Pioneer was 5)

2A - Rensselaer Central def. Mater Dei, 45-21 (Rensselaer was 2, Mater Dei was 1)

3A - Tri-West Hendricks (Lizton, Ind.) def. Andrean, 49-27 (Tri West was 5, Andrean was 1)

4A - New Palestine def. New Prairie, 77-42 (New Palestine was 2 in AP, New Prairie was 8)

5A - Indianapolis Cathedral (Indianapolis, Ind.) def. LaPorte, 56-7 (Cathedral was 7th in AP, LaPorte was unranked at 16th or worse)

6A - Ben Davis (Indianapolis) def. Carmel, 42-24 (Ben Davis was 4 in AP, Carmel was 1)

Final Associated Press high school football poll of season

So let's review:

- Only 6-of-12 projected finalists by AP made it to the finals (granted 1-2 could have been on same side of bracket, but all 12 could have theoretically been separated, too, in a given year)

- NONE (zero) of AP's six No. 1 teams won a state title in Indiana last year

- NONE (zero) of AP's six No. 2 teams actually finished second

So that gives us two possible answers:

1) There were a boatload/slew/ton of upsets left, right and center

2) AP rankings (as others have pointed out) are little more than useless in high school sports.

Frankly, I'm leaning more toward the latter than the former.

Now let's look at how CalPreps/MaxPreps computer had those same 12 teams ranked in their respective classes:

calpreps.com/2014/ratings/Indiana_division.htm

6A: Ben Davis 1, Carmel 2

5A: Cathedral 1, LaPorte 6

4A: New Palestine 1, New Prairie 3

3A: Tri-West 1, Andrean 2

2A: Rensselaer Central 1, Mater Dei 2

1A: North Vermillion 1, Pioneer 2

CalPreps had all six state champs ranked No. 1 and had 4/6 No. 2 teams make it to the final.

But yeah, sure, use AP as your main source.

I agree 100 PERCENT with your first two bolded parts. ... It's the last part I take issue with (but not your fault).

Central Hardin fans should be content/happy/thrilled with where they are (especially based on where they came from). The Lawson-Perry-Mattingly coaching group has righted the ship (and should be commended).

But to say they're top five? That's taking fandom straight out of Reality Town on a one-way trip to Delusional Ville.

I didn't start pointing out Central Hardin's fallacies until its own fans (or at least people who claimed to support Central Hardin) decided the Bruins were on perches and branches they hadn't flown/climbed to yet. They just placed them there and dared anybody to question them (and called you biased and a hater if you did).

I said it once and I'll say it again: Central Hardin should -- and I expect them to -- cruise in their next three games (Woodford, Ohio, Henderson/Meade). That leaves McCracken for a bid in the final four. Obviously Central Hardin knows what it takes to win at McCracken (been there, done that). Win that -- the polls say otherwise, but it's NOT like McCracken is miles and miles ahead of Central Hardin -- and it's gravy/icing for making to the semis (where Goliath awaits).

That's a FABULOUS season for Central Hardin (not the best winning percentage -- which would be last year -- but easily longest postseason run in the 20-plus-year history). I'm not going to fault the Bruins for that at all. That's a season many would be proud of (and would gladly trade based on what they're going through).

So own that.

That being said, it doesn't move the needle for Central Hardin (or any other area team for that matter) as a heavyweight or a "top five" team. And while I have NOT seen a player or coach claim the Bruins as such, it's NOT helping to have parents/disenchanted fans throw that on the Bruins (and give people extra incentive to think they're a team with undue/unearned hype).

Let the chips fall where they may and enjoy the ride.

And if you prove people wrong in the process? HUGE BONUS.

I'll eat crow. I won't shy away.

Well you tried and I give you credit for that but your issues are much deeper rooted than I am certified to attempt to help. I'll leave you with all your bitterness by yourself. Get well soon. GO BRUINS!!!!

I wonder what the mighty computer said last year when Henderson at 4-5 beat Owensboro then they went on to be state runner ups?? I bet Henderson wasn't the favorite go look it up for us Bryan.

Oh yeah most computer polls keep going as the playoffs so at the end number one is the team that wins it all.

Oh yeah most computer polls keep going as the playoffs so at the end number one is the team that wins it all.

Then you're going to have to prove that the No. 1 team climbed there and was not there at the end of the regular season (when that same exact team could have ended the season No. 1).

Good luck with that.

You could argue Male was the favorite in 14 and 13 and choked.

I don't the last time the 6-A champ flew under the radar or came out of nowhere. I'm drawing a blank.

Being the favorite is a bit different than being the best. Male definitely had the capability to win both of those years but they were beaten fairly on the field. Unless my memory fails me they didn't lose due to injuries, bad calls, weather, or some other external factor.

Anyway, I agree with the rest of your points on this thread. It's a shame some CH posters believe that you are posting out of spite/hate against their team just because you don't agree with placing CH in the top five.

I have no doubt Owensboro was favored (and lost).

I also know Louisville Central shouldn't have lost to Knox Central (and did, but that was an upset according to computers AND AP).

Did you miss where we pointed out Central Hardin was No. 2 in 6-A last year to end the regular season by the AP? Remind me again how that worked out ...

Or that NONE of the AP No. 1 teams in Indiana won state titles last year. O-for-6.

You're backing someone with a ZERO percent success rate over an unbiased computer (with way more proven success)?

What sense does that make?

I also dare you to find me a game where the computer said it was a HUGE upset (like Henderson over Owensboro), but humans said it should have happened (it's going to have to be in class, since AP ranks teams per class and not overall. Thus, Henderson over Owensboro does NOT count because you can't compare one team's ranking in its class to another team's ranking in its class).

I'm not the only one saying it, but come after me if you want: AP high school football rankings are not very good/accurate to use (and haven't been for a while).

There are better sources. Multiple in fact. Why not use them?

A few years ago, when Trinity was playing several out-of-state schools, the Shamrocks opened on a losing streak. Fell out of the AP top-10. Guess what happened?

Same thing for Louisville Central when it opens the season with losses to 6-A Louisville powers. AP voters tend to start voting the Jackets lower because they're losing (although to great competition). Again, guess what usually happens?

AP voters don't see everyone. They look at records and that's about it (because that's all you have time for when you're ranking 60 teams -- 10 per class and YES a voter must do all six classes even though they may not have a local team in a class at all -- while computers have far more data at their disposal).

Being the favorite is a bit different than being the best. Male definitely had the capability to win both of those years but they were beaten fairly on the field. Unless my memory fails me they didn't lose due to injuries, bad calls, weather, or some other external factor.

I think Central Hardin has come a LOOOOOOONG way (especially just in the last 3 years).

Beefed up the schedule quite a bit (and deserve credit for doing so).

Went toe-to-toe with Boyle (and that would have been unlikely 5-10-15 years ago).

Finally getting used to hosting playoff games on an annual basis (a step in the right direction).

I also said I expect CH to roll in its next three games and possibly win at McCracken -- AGAIN.

However, don't DARE say the Bruins are NOT in the top five or top 10. Then you're labeled as a hater or biased or have an axe to grind.

Frankly, I'd say the same thing about several area teams in a variety of sports. Some people think I'm an E'town homer, but they better remember I pointed out E'town's schedule was weak AND had my doubts about beating even North Hardin this season (the thread and posts are still there). And I'm not sure E'town makes it past Caldwell or Tilghman, yet I'm supposedly an E'town homer and a Central hater.

That makes perfect sense.

I guess.

Your missing my point. Computer poll or ap poll both are wrong. I go by look and then a little of both polls with that said those 4 teams that I'm talking about are in the top 5 which means they could win a state title and it won't be that big of a surprise.

I'll give you

-- Gibson Southern (which would need an upset)

-- FJ Reitz (which would need at least one upset, maybe 2)

-- Caldwell (which would need TWO upsets: The LexCath-Boyle-Central survivor and Belfry)

-- Owensboro or Christian County (obviously they can't BOTH be in the finals, only one can make it that far; plus, again, need an upset)

You MIGHT have four (although ALL four would need to pull upsets; NONE of the four are the overwhelming heavyweight favorite to win their class at this point)

Of course, a lot of teams MIGHT have four teams beat them to win it all.

Heck, Central Hardin could have

- Boyle or Tilghman (3-A)

- South Warren or John Hardin (4-A)

- Bowling Green (5-A)

- Trinity/Male (6-A), if the Bruins make it to the West Semis

Frankly, I like Central Hardin's chances of seeing four finalists/title teams (3-A Boyle, 4-A South Warren, 5-A Bowling Green and 6-A Male) over Henderson's shot.

The computers agree with me.

i don't know Gibson southern is the smoothest team ive ever seen!! Those guys start 22 seniors and have 8 other seniors that play they just don't make mistakes i don't know if they would upset anybody.
