6 of Canada's 10 previous Prime Ministers have been elected as members of Canada's Liberal Party, which is the middle/moderate party of the three primary parties in the Canadian government system. The Conservative Party would lie further right on the political spectrum, and the New Democratic Party would lie further to the left.

The Prime Minister-Elect, Justin Trudeau, was elected in what many consider a response to a minor conservative referendum in the September 2003 election, and is thought to show that Canada's conservatism over the last decade has not been well received by the people of Canada. Trudeau, a 43 year old, is the son of Pierre Trudeau, a former Canadian Prime Minister and Liberal Party Member. The Liberal Party also saw a 20.5% upswing in their number of parliamentary seats in this election, while the Conservative Party saw a 7.7% loss, and the New Democratic Party saw a 10.9% loss.

Here is a list of major platforms of the incoming administration. I'd be interested to see how many BGPers would feel about voting for someone with similar platforms were they to run here in the United States:

- Cut the middle class tax bracket ($45,000 — $90,000) from 22% to 20.5% and create a new tax bracket for income above $200,000 taxed at 33%

- Set national targets to lower greenhouse gas emissions through cooperation with provinces, support Keystone XL with a stricter environmental review process, spend $20 billion over 10 years on "greener infrastructure

- Run three years of deficits that will not exceed $10 billion dollars to finance infrastructure projects and balance the budget in 2019

- Spend $60 billion in new infrastructure spending, including $20 billion in transit infrastructure and quadrupling federal funding for public transit, all over three years

- Invest $300 million annually to fund a Youth Employment Strategy

- Reduce employment insurance (EI) premiums from $1.88 per $100 to $1.65 per $100

- Replace the Universal Child Care Benefit with a Canada Child Benefit that would provide $2,500 more to an average family of four

- Support training efforts in Ukraine and sanctions against Russia, end the bombing mission against ISIS but increase humanitarian aid and training of local ground troops

- Take in 25,000 Syrian refugees and spend $100 million for refugee processing and settlement

- Negotiate a new health accord with the provinces to guarantee long-term funding, including a national plan for lower prescription drug prices

- Invest $3 billion over four years to improve home health care

- Set up an all-party committee to pass legislation implementation of physician assisted death

- Full legalization of marijuana

-Implement electoral reform to move from a first past the post electoral system to a system in which the eat count more closely match the popular vote

-Implementing a non-partisan appointment process for the Senate modeled on that of the Order of Canada, after having removed Liberal senators from the party caucus in 2014

Almost everything was more spending. The balance budget in 3 years is a nice goal. But with some of the programs suggested doesn't seem feasible.

With just a quick glance, I may be on board with all except the ending of bombings against ISIS.

I don't know enough about the state of the Canadian economy right now to know if a lot of these things make sense. On its face, it just seems like a bunch of liberal ways to solve problems. Just spend money you don't have and penalize people making over $200,000 because class warfare works...

One point really struck me as funny. Invest $3 billion over the next 4 years to improve home health care...what the heck does that even mean? No fraud opportunity there...

I like most of the platform.

And I didn't know that Canada had an electoral system.

Doing further research of this guy , it's astounding how a country could elect him. Wow.

The same will be said for Hillary.

Reading these results is astounding and a real indication of how these major swings can happen in proportional representation governments.

The Liberals went from 99 seats to 168. Massive gains in Quebec and British Columbia over the last election. I don't know what the New Democratic Party did to the people of Quebec but they bailed on those guys in DROVES.

In truth, the Canadians are to Conservative-led governments what Kentuckians are to Republican governors: once every 30 years or so they elect one then after a few years they run right back home.

I agree.

BTW, his wife is pretty darn hot. So at least Canada has a hot First Lady going for them. :idunno:
