AGAIN!! I WILL GET THE FINAL RULING FROM MY SOURCE AND LET YOU KNOW!!

You act as though the ruling will be over turned. Let it go. The refs did not hand this game over to NCC. The penalties killed NCC, again this week. Looks like they'll be doing some more up/downs at practice next week. Like the 80 from last week's practice weren't enough. The Breds need to be more disciplined. The players need to have a "team"mentality not a "me" mentality. They need to learn is not about them is about the team. Stupid unsportsmanlike penalties need to stop and come on offsides??? That's a freshmen/jr.high mistake not one that should be committed by a junior or a senior. Coaches need to Crack down on the kids committing these penalties every week, every game. I bet there's plenty of kids on the sidelines just itching at the chance to step up. And how many times is NewCath going to run the ball straight up the middle??? Been there, done that, everyone knows that's the game plan. The OC needs to make some adjustments or run some different plays because I'm pretty sure other teams know what plays are being called week in and week out, doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. The Breds can't expect to beat Lloyd with those penalties. Better tighten things up.

The only thing on the tape that could change this was the returner gaining possession of the punt.

You were there - I wasn't. Did the returner gain possession?

No but the returner touched the ball in play. It is the same as if he touches it at the 30 yard line and the punting team picks up the ball UNLESS he was blocked into the ball. At that point it would be a dead ball. It is my belief that he was not blocked into the ball but then again I've been wrong before. Just ask my wife.

My assistant described the play like this...Smith decides not to field punt and goes to block HC player...HC player hits Smith knocking Smith into the ball...ball goes into the end zone where it is eventually recovered by HC, but called a touchback. I haven't seen it either myself.

So no possession gained. I cited the rule that says the kick ends when possession is gained. So we agree that there was no possession which means the kick didn't end.

I then cited the rule that said a kick (it's still a kick after it bounced off the returner) that goes into the EZ is a touchback.

It is NOT the same as the play you cite. The EZ matters. Your source will tell you the same thing.

The play is up on Hudl. Play 136. I had an official review it.

Touchback.

Box Score

Play by Play

I may be adjusting this slightly after reviewing film, but I the basic events are correct from the notes of my assistant.

From the rulebook:

2-24-2 A kick ends when a player gains possession or when the ball becomes dead while not in player possession.

Key is that the kick never ended because no team gained possession

6-3-1-a it is a touchback of any free kick or scrimmage kick: which is not a scoring attempt or which is a grounded three-point field goal attempt, breaks the plane of R's goal line, unless R chooses a spot of first touching by K.

Since the kick never ended it was still a kick when it went into the EZ. Any kick going into the EZ is a dead ball and a touchback.

This is a PERFECT example of why words in the rule and their definitions matter.

I don't think anyone believes that a ball touching a player constitutes possession, right?

Notice that there is no caveat about "touching." It just says "possession."

I already stated that.

Touchback.

Actually play 135

I already stated that.

Regardless the Refs didn't hand this game to the Breds. Watch the play again on Hudl it's play 135. NewCath player was hit by HC player which knocked him into the ball, which went into the EZ. NCC player was not trying to block the HC player as was stated earlier.
