Newport Central Catholic 20 Covington Holy Cross 13

Jake Smith looked like he was getting out of the way of the ball, and the Holy Cross player just "drilled" him into the ball. It was obvious Smith had NO intention of touching the ball that deep. I thought it should have been a penalty on the Holy Cross player for the hit......but what do I know. :lol2:

IMO he was not getting out of the way. IMO he was skiddish and danced around nervously because he got drilled earlier in the game but what do I know.

We all something different then, because I thought he was trying to block the oncoming Holy Cross player to allow the ball time to bounce into the end zone. Either way a flag was not thrown even as the bean bag was thrown at the 3 yard line. It was a big call/noncall, because the Holy Cross player recovered the ball in the end zone.

That makes two of us. Anyone else want to join the club? :lol2:

While a NewCath player (literally on top of it) stood there looking at the ball as well, I was surprised he didn't fall on it.

The NewCath and Holy Cross player looked at the ball for what seemed like a minute, before the Holy Cross player picked it up.

It doesn't matter who saw what - was he trying to block, get away, whatever.

Call was correct.

In high school once the ball crosses the goal line without the receiving team having possession then it's a touchback. The "touch" is not "possession."

Correct call. Another case of applying pro/college rules to high school. High school has some different rules.

NewCath and lack of discipline when it comes to penalties is a perennial problem during big games. So far it has hurt them in 4 games. This is on the players. Discipline comes from within, not from without. Find it and you can go far. Stay the current course and lose an important game that you should not have lost. Coaches can only do so much.

Mex, I agree with you to a certain level, but nothing has ever been done. Until there are consequences to actions you are going to get more of the same.

Smith wasn't scared to catch the ball after he was drilled!! Wanna keep repeating it go ahead it doesn't change anything about the game. He was clearly getting out of the way to let the ball go into the end zone when he was drilled from behind which should have been a penalty. Since the refs gave this game to nCC please share the penalty count I guarantee you this my friend it was definitely lopsided. If people are looking for a reason this game was close blame it on penalties and poor play calling period.

Why should there have been a penalty? Was the ball still in the air?

No, rolling on the ground.

Unless Smith wasn't close to the ball then I fail to picture how it was a penalty.

Once again, I am an unbiased third party. I saw what I saw. I have a reliable source who will be looking at the refs arbiter system who will let me know after he reviews the tape and I will let you all know what it says. Until that happens I stand by the fact that I believe it should have been an HC TD. I will say this again though. NewCath is an undisciplined team and they earned every penalty the got called on them. Very dirty as well and they got caught multiple times tonight. If NewCath has any chance of going deep in the playoffs their practices will be the worst and hardest they have ever experienced to remind them that penalties and dirty play will not be tolerated or condoned.

Believe what you will. Call was correct.

Once again I will let you all know when I find out. I am man enough to admit if I was wrong. I just hope that if I'm right that the NewCath fans will suck it up and take it like a champ. Of course it's irrelevant at this point but if they run into HC in the playoffs and don't change their ways it may be an early playoff exit for the Breds.

Same rule applies on a kickoff.

Let's say the returner is trying to prevent a kickoff from going into the EZ so that he can return it. Kick is high and he jumps up to try to catch it. Tips off of his hands and lands in the EZ. Dead. Doesn't need to cover it up. Kicking team can't recover. Touchback.

Same play.
