What is the expectation for officials when players are blocking for a run? Had a play on Friday when a Cooper player was blocking a DH player and at the end of play about same time whistle was blown, DH player fell out of bounds. Didn't seem like an intentional shove only block to the whistle and play ended blocking stopped. Official called personal foul on Cooper, players don't stop on a dime when blocking and with the rain and mud it's even harder. Anyone else at the game have a take on it? What about everyone else?

The flag should not have been thrown. There is no such thing as excessive blocking as far as I know of. Now if it occurred more than 15+ yards away from the ball, then it could possibly be thrown. This block was right in front of the runner and the defensive player was simply over powered by the blocker. Just because it looked bad, doesn't mean a flag should be thrown. Wasn't it the white hat that threw the flag?

Clarification is a good thing.

Same thing happened at Harrison Co last week against Holmes. The called a personal foul when the guy slid in the mud going out of bounds.

One of the 2015 POEs is excessive contact including contact happening prior to the whistle.

 

One of the questions officials are now asking themselves is "was the contact excessive or unnecessary?" If so, it's a penalty regardless of where and when it happens.

 

So if you see a guy on a breakaway and his teammates peels back on a defender who is 30 yards away it's a penalty.

 

Hits around the pile are also being watched. It's not "anything goes until the whistle" any longer.

 

So when we say the officials are not making the correct call we are probably not using the same guidelines as they are being instructed to use.

I dont like any personal foul penalty that includes a blocking situation (excluding a black in the back or chop block). We were all taught to block until the whistle is blown, no matter how far you are from a play. If you have engaged the contact, there should be no seperation until that whistle. Say you drive your man, 10 yards ahead of the play near the sideline, you knock him out of bounds, then move on to the next defender or stop all together, there isnt a rule that says he cant come back in bounds and make a tackle. Why shouldnt u be able to knock him out of bounds? Way too many rules these days.

Officials have been enforcing blocks away from the play for the past several years and I am completely ok with protecting a kid from a peel back block 20 yards behind a play, but when you are blocking in the middle of the field...you never know when and where the back may cut or reverse field, seems a little to subjective to me.

Of course it is subjective. Many penalties require the official to make a subjective determination.

To clarify the posted question. This is concerning a block where the runner was maybe 5 to 7 yards directly behind the fb lead block outside the tackle box heading towards the DH sideline. The fb drove the kid to the sideline, released the block prior to the tackle, prior to the whistle and prior to the defender flopping out of bounds. It was clear as day and a bad "judgement" call on a good football play.

I think alot of times refs are simply unqualified. Idk what it takes to get the license but so many times this season i have seen bad calls made, simply on the side of caution, ie a kid is not down, still fighting, but being pushed backwards, still working his way from east to west, but still being pushed backwards. On the other hand i have seen refe nearly swallow their whistles and nearly get a kids knees blown out before the play is blown dead. Its the inconsistency that drives me crazy.
