KHSAA state draw

The private schools dominate not just because they start earlier but because parents who have girls that are talented volleyball players and have the money to send them to a private school like NDA or Assumption do because they are known to have the best volleyball teams. Therefore, talented players are pulled away from the public schools. As a result a public school will never win a state championship in the state of Kentucky under the current system.

Private school kids aren't necessarily more athletic, but they are more talented in volleyball. There is a focus on sports at private schools. This focus has kids start competing at the kindergarten level in organized programs geared to teach fundamentals. In third grade the start competing against other schools. All the while, these kids are encouraged to join club volleyball.

There is no overall true focus on sports at a public school, nor is there an emphasis on excellence outside of the classroom. Public school kids are left to figure it out on their own. Many do, but not to the degree that private school kids do, which is why they will never compete until a cultural change takes place.

Private schools - typically are tied to a church/parish or a group of church's/parish's. Because of this, parents typically consider the school an extension of themselves for life, and therefore they stay active in the school system for years and years. They are encouraged to stay involved. Typically they are k-8, and feed one HS.

Public schools in my area generally are k-5 (elementary), 6-8 (middle), 9-12 (high school).

Typically parents move from one piece of the education system to the next and never look back. There is no knowledge transfer, no volunteerism, no sense of belonging to something more, and nor is it encouraged. Bring on the next crop of lemmings! And if you live in Kenton Co, the kids get split into different Middle and High schools along the way, so you don't even have a direct line to your final destination. Add to this that the high school, middle school, and elementary schools all have their own principals, athletic directors, and coaches who don't share a common vision, or in most cases don't even speak to one another about a combined strategy, and the disadvantage grows even larger.

Yet in spite of that, public schools still manage to turn out athletes which would make

any private school envious. It's not a genetic thing. Private school kids aren't superior, they're just better organized

Agreed, and when parents of talented public school kids get frustrated enough with the system, if they have the money, by high school they consider sending them to NDA or St. Henry so they can play volleyball with what they consider to be superior teams. Some larger public schools with large pools of talent, like Ryle and some others keep enough players to stay competitive but I don't see them competing with Assumption, Mercy, etc.

It's Kentucky!!! A dynasty was started 20 years ago and continues with 3 disciples It's tradition that is fed every year by new eager parents.

Sad that the JV State Tournament being played this weekend is properly seeded and the Varsity State is not.

Call me ignorant if need be, but what JV State Tournament are you referring to? I'm completely unaware of any JV or Freshmen level state tournament in KY. JV teams in Louisville are ending their regular seasons this week with no tourney as usual.

Mercy, Assumption, NDA, Presentation are the top 4 seeds. Sacred Heart, St. Henry, Louis Holy Cross, North Oldham, Henry Clay and others are all playing in the KY JV Championships this Saturday at OVVC.

I'm ignorant then...I've been concentrating on the 5/6th CSAA tourney starting this week.

Since there are no district or regional tournaments for JV/Freshman, how exactly were these teams selected for the tournament? Invitation only, by records??

JV state tournament in Volleyball???? That is news to me. Could you point us to a article, link or something?

Thank you

Since the smaller schools have the All A Classic maybe the Public schools should have an independent tournament that is separate from the State championship. At least that way, public schools would be able to compete amongst themselves for a championship on equal footing.

Lol. Wow! Didn't mean to stir the pot in this way. I don't know how to post links or any of that. I saw a tournament info sheet with pools, bracket play, etc and it was titled KY JV Championships. My daughter doesn't play JV, another parent had it at one of our matches.

The point of my post was that it was seeded and, seemed to be accurate. I have no idea how it was seeded, how you get in, or any of that.

It's not a true "State Championship" from a KHSAA perspective, and it is invitation only as far as I know.

So instead of working harder and getting better, let's just start up the NIT, just to claim what, you're the best public school? Just like no one believes the "All-A" is a state championship, that would be a hollow victory as well, knowing certain teams were left off the invitation list.

There's 16 Regions and only 3 of them typically have a private school winning them. That's at least 13 opportunities for Public Schools every year.

There's a ton of posts on here this year explaining the reasons private schools do well - and it's not because they are on "unequal" footing. Public schools rake in the tax $$, they have the facilities, and they often have a larger female student class (see previous posts). What they don't have is a commitment to the sport to start earlier and make volleyball a priority, and the same commitment from the parents to play year 'round.

Can I get an Amen!
